While multi-agent systems offer scalability and adaptability, a critical gap remains in formally governing the resource consumption and operational duration of autonomous agents. This paper introduces ‘Agent Contracts: A Formal Framework for Resource-Bounded Autonomous AI Systems’-a novel approach unifying task specifications, resource constraints, and temporal boundaries into a coherent governance mechanism. By establishing conservation laws for delegated budgets and offering explicit lifecycle semantics, Agent Contracts enable predictable, auditable, and scalable multi-agent coordination with demonstrably improved efficiency and quality-resource trade-offs. Could this framework become a foundational element for trustworthy and reliable autonomous AI deployment in complex, real-world scenarios?
