Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials’ Ending, Explained

Building on the popularity of shows like The Thursday Murder Club and Wake Up Dead Man, Netflix is continuing to produce captivating murder mysteries. Their latest offering adapts Agatha Christie’s novel, The Seven Dials Mystery, and naturally, the story kicks off with a murder. While the original novel has its share of surprises, this new Netflix version adds a few extra twists of its own.

In Seven Dials, Lady Eileen Brent, nicknamed “Bundle,” begins investigating when her friend Gerry Wade dies under strange circumstances. Her investigation quickly takes a dangerous turn with the death of another friend, Ronny Devereux, leading her to suspect a secret group called the Seven Dials is responsible. The mystery culminates at a party for scientist Dr. Matip, where his valuable formula for an unbreakable metal is stolen, and a guest, Jimmy Thesiger, is shot.

Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials Unmasks Multiple Killers

Jimmy claimed a large man attacked him, but the only person found at the scene was Loraine, who said she came because she worried about him. This was a lie, though – she actually tried to steal Matip’s formula and escape on a train. Bundle, Jimmy, and Bill managed to stop her, and Bundle realized Loraine had intended to sneak into the party and steal the formula all along. But she hadn’t acted alone.

Jimmy admits he was working with Loraine the whole time. He tells Bundle he killed Ronny because Ronny was starting to figure things out, which is why Ronny used his dying moments to point Bundle towards Jimmy. Jimmy also shot himself at the party to help Loraine. As for Loraine, she poisoned her brother because she thought he was discovering their plan to sell the formula.

Jimmy also admitted to changing the time on the clocks after Gerry’s death, hoping to mislead the police. He didn’t know anything about the secret organization Gerry was involved in, only hearing Gerry briefly mention it to Loraine with a hint of remorse. Jerry and Loraine were planning to meet their leader, the person responsible for the crime, on a train, but Bundle and Bill managed to arrest both of them and stop the train before they could reach him.

This adaptation stays pretty true to the original Seven Dials story, though a few things are different. In the book, Jimmy is revealed as the murderer in both cases, and Ronny sets up the clocks as a test to try and get a reaction from the killer. The climax happens at the Seven Dials club, not on a train, and Jimmy and Loraine aren’t working for anyone else – unlike in the TV series.

Seven Dials’ True Mastermind Hits Close to Home

Once Bundle dealt with Jimmy and Loraine, she went to confront their boss – and was shocked to discover it was her own mother, Lady Caterham. As viewers learned in previous episodes, Lady Caterham struggled financially after the deaths of her son and husband, and she believed the British government was responsible. Driven by resentment and a need to secure her and Bundle’s future, she planned to sell a valuable formula to their rivals.

She agreed to have the party at Chimneys as a way to gather information about the formula, but she didn’t plan any violence. Even so, Bundle continues to threaten her mother with a gun until Superintendent Battle shows up and arrests her. This differs significantly from the original Seven Dials story, where Lord Caterham survives and isn’t revealed to be a criminal.

Seven Dials Gives Bundle a New Family Legacy

The mystery of Seven Dials is solved when Bundle discovers the truth about the secret society: it’s actually a group dedicated to protecting the world. She also learns her father was one of their agents, and his death in the series’ opening scene occurred while he was trying to keep a dangerous formula out of the wrong hands, specifically from a contact named Matip. Lady Caterham discovered the existence of this formula through her husband’s acquaintances, which motivated her plan to steal it.

Additionally, Superintendent Battle, connected to the mysterious Seven Dials, recognizes Bundle’s talent for investigation after she helps solve Gerry’s murder. He offers her a position to replace her father, and with no commitments holding her back, Bundle readily accepts.

Although the story concludes similarly in Seven Dials, the organization featured is officially supported by the government in the original book. Gerry and Ronny were both members before their deaths, and Bill is also a part of it, taking Lord Caterham’s place. After everything they go through, Bundle and Bill get engaged in the book, but in this version, they stay friends.
