As a gamer with over three decades of Marvel Universe under my belt, I can confidently say that Agatha All Along has truly cast a spell on me! The season finale was a rollercoaster ride filled with twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat. The reveal about Teen being none other than Billy Maximoff was an absolute game-changer, especially after his disappearance in WandaVision.
The initial season of Agatha All Along has come to an end on Disney+, leaving open the possibility for further enchanting escapades in the world of witches!
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Agatha All Along Season 1
In this reimagined tale, Agatha Harkness, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn, reclaimed her lost memories and embarked on a mission to amass power. Alongside her was the young Teen (Joe Locke) and an assortment of witches including Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata), Alice (Ali Ahn), Lilia (Patti LuPone), and Sharon, their eccentric neighbor (Debra Jo Rupp). Agatha guided them through a legendary path known as the Witch’s Road, rumored to fulfill any witch’s heart’s desire.
Throughout the season, it was revealed that each member of the coven was systematically eliminated, with Rio – portrayed by Aubrey Plaza – being the hunter. Interestingly, Rio was not just any ordinary adversary; she was Death itself…and a former partner of Agatha.
The recent episodes have unveiled some massive secrets, transforming the storyline and paving the way for more exciting journeys within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Who is Teen?
It was no surprise to many viewers that Teen was revealed to be Billy Maximoff, one of Wanda Maximoff’s twin sons from the TV series WandaVision. After the Hex disappeared and Billy went missing, his spirit resided within William Kaplan following his car accident death. Now, Billy seeks to reunite with his brother Tommy and enlists Agatha for assistance.
During the course of the exciting journey, Billy discovers his abilities and dons a suit to embody his comic book persona, Wiccan. Agatha was trying to strike a bargain with Rio/Death, intending to give up Billy (who, as it turns out, shouldn’t be alive at all) in order to prolong her own life. In the heat of the battle, Wiccan rescued Jennifer. However, in an act of self-sacrifice to protect Billy, Agatha gave him a kiss and perished herself. This event triggered another startling disclosure.
The truth behind the Witch’s Road
It was discovered that Witch’s Road was merely a legend beforehand. In the 18th century, Agatha miraculously gave birth to a son named Nicholas, defying Rio/Death’s prediction that he wouldn’t survive. Agatha nurtured her son and created a song about a witch’s road, improvising verses as they went along. She would journey to various towns, using Nicholas to attract witches so she could eliminate them.
In time, Death claimed Nicholas, and Agatha hummed a tune at his resting place. Another sorceress approached her, inquiring about the Witch’s Path as rumors of it swelled. Seeing this as a chance, Agatha revealed that they required a coven first. After they assembled, they sang their melody, but instead of revealing the path, Agatha provoked the witches into assaulting her, so she could absorb their power and ultimately end their lives.
In essence, Agatha’s infamous path, known as the Witch’s Road, served as a longstanding deception that she employed for centuries to eliminate fellow witches, preserving her own youth and powers. She intended to apply this trick on the coven in Episode 2, but surprisingly, the road transformed due to Billy’s magical prowess. This transformation was essentially an embodiment of the Hex, as seen through Billy’s eyes. The road’s abundance of clichés and tropes, even featuring Agatha as the Wicked Witch of the West, stemmed from Billy’s fascination with witch lore. This revelation left Billy grappling with guilt about the innocent witches who perished because of his unintentional spell.
How the ending sets up a season 2
In a recent encounter, Billy found himself face-to-face with Agatha, now appearing as a ghost with white hair reminiscent of her comic book persona. She proposed a task to Billy: to transfer Tommy’s spirit into the body of a drowning teenager, but Billy refused, as he was unwilling to take another life. A dispute ensued, and Billy attempted to send Agatha away. In a surprising confession, Agatha revealed that her prolonged avoidance of Death stemmed from her inability to endure the thought of seeing her son again.
Billy was persuaded to let the spectral Agatha serve as his guide, and the two departed on a journey to seek out Tommy’s spirit. Fans of comic books will recognize that Tommy transforms into the super-speedster known as Speed, and he and Billy eventually became founding members of the Young Avengers team.
Marvel is hinting at the formation of the Young Avengers, as indicated by a post-credit scene in The Marvels, where Kamala Khan invited Kate Bishop and proposed they also search for Cassie Lang (Ant-Man’s daughter). The discovery of Tommy might also play a crucial role in the team coming together.
For Agatha, a witch known for her immense power and craftiness, it might not be overly challenging to concoct a means to resurrect herself, given that her supposed demise is only a mystery at this point. It’s plausible that the specter of her death could merely be an elaborate ruse designed to manipulate Billy into granting her additional power. Remember, Agatha has a history of eliminating numerous witches throughout the centuries, and therefore, her intentions cannot be fully relied upon.
Currently, Marvel has yet to confirm whether there will be a second season of “Agatha All Along” or not. Nonetheless, it seems that the story of Agatha and Billy is set to carry on, providing a foundation for further enchanting journeys within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
