Agatha All Along Episode 7 review: The Lilia-centric episode we needed has arrived

As a longtime fan of fantasy and witchcraft, I must admit that this week’s episode of Agatha All Along left me utterly spellbound! The transformation of Lilia into Glinda the Good Witch and Jen into the Evil Queen was nothing short of magical – it felt as if I had been transported straight to Oz!

Previous week’s episode of ‘Agatha All Along’ revealed that Billy Kaplan (Joe Locke) is determined to traverse the Witches Road due to his quest to locate his missing sibling, Tommy. Following the dismissal of other witches, Billy embarks on this journey with the guidance of Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn).

In this week’s episode titled “Death’s Hand in Mind,” surprisingly, it doesn’t begin with the usual duo. Rather, the storyline initially revolves around Lilia (played by Patti LuPone). So, is there a reason for this shift in focus and does Lilia take center stage in this episode?

Find out the answer to those questions below, and remember that there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

Agatha and Billy walk down the Witches Road…

In case you’re curious about where Rio has gone, who was part of the coven not too long ago before vanishing, this episode offers some explanations which I’m pleased about. Let’s see more of Rio, let’s see more Aubrey Plaza! However, Agatha refuses to discuss Billy’s questions concerning her, instead steering the conversation towards a contentious subject: Billy’s mother, better known as the Scarlet Witch. Is she truly deceased? According to Agatha, yes; after all, she did witness what seemed to be Wanda’s corpse…right?

The questions were temporarily set aside as they reached their next court session. What a puzzle! I found the spooky castle ambiance and costume change to iconic movie antagonists fascinating. Agatha took on the role of the Wicked Witch of the West, sporting green skin, while Billy assumed the character of Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.

Within the eerie manor, Agatha and Billy stumble upon a table smack-dab in the center of a room. A message on display reads, “Your journey takes you beyond time.” Billy swiftly notices a deck of Tarot cards nearby. As soon as he picks them up, it’s showtime.

Billy attempts to perform a Tarot reading on Agatha, yet ends up with an incorrect interpretation, causing swords from the ceiling to tumble down. This game can be risky, and only someone exceptionally skilled in Tarot might dare participate. I’m curious if there is anyone like that around…

The story of Lilia

We return to Jen (Sasheer Zamata) and Lilia, who surprisingly survived the mud they were submerged in by Billy. This moment is quite peculiar because Lilia appears dazed from her fall, while Jen is also trying to regain her composure. I thoroughly enjoyed watching their interaction. They were a delightful mix of chaos, and I found myself completely engaged.

Now, it will be confusing to explain what happens next, so try to follow.

Lilia recalls something she said to Alice (Ali Ahn) in the fourth episode, which unexpectedly transports her back to those specific scenes and moments. She subsequently travels back to a scene from the third episode, and ultimately finds herself face-to-face with a woman from her childhood during the Renaissance period. This woman speaks Sicilian and is intrigued by how long Lilia (as a young teenager) has been traveling.

Could you possibly be wondering about the unusual circumstances surrounding Lilia? Why is she getting tossed through time so randomly? What’s the significance of it all?

When she reunites with Jen on the Witches Road once more, she recognizes that this event was part of her childhood. Frequently, she’d experience being drawn through various instances from past, present, and future. It appears to be recurring now, but with a greater intensity. In truth, time is merely an apparition.

The Trial

In due course, Lilia and Jen wind up right in the center of the court case involving Agatha and Billy. You might wonder what characters they have taken on by the time they reach the trial, and you won’t be disappointed! Lilia assumes the role of Glinda (the Good Witch) from The Wizard of Oz, while Jen steps into the shoes of the aged Evil Queen (in her worn-out attire and wrinkled skin) from Snow White. It’s quite a spectacle, and I must say it fits them rather well.

For much of the episode, Lilia finds herself shuttled between various time periods that ultimately lead to the court case. In the end, it’s her Tarot and time expertise that solves the mystery. It’s captivating to see her understanding deepen and broaden with each instance, and by the time she decides to tackle the trial, she no longer harbors anger towards Billy for his actions against her and Jen.

Lilia reveals every card essential for resolving the case, among them disclosing herself as The Traveler. Empathy has always been her strength, making her continue to feel remorseful about her inability to shield her coven from the epidemic.

As Lilia reveals and examines each card, the trial nears its dramatic conclusion. No longer do swords rain from above, instead the ceiling descends upon them, culminating at the exact instant when Lilia solves the trial…revealing a momentous truth about Rio Vidal’s persona.

Ending of Agatha All Along Season 1, Episode 7 explained

Upon reaching “The Destination,” Lilia is drawn back into a recollection of her and Jen on the Witches Road. However, there’s an unexpected third party present: a shadowy figure emerges from the darkness, and lo and behold, it’s none other than…Rio…or perhaps, it’s Death. Yes, you heard it right, Rio is none other than DEATH! Let’s rewind to the instant when it was disclosed that death had been in their midst. It’s starting to make sense now!

At the trial, Agatha swiftly sets down the Death card right in the center of the table as a precaution against the ceiling potentially harming everyone. Later on, Lilia discloses to everyone that Rio embodies Death.

Ah, in the final moments, Lilia shares a crucial secret with her fellow witches before giving her life for their protection – something she couldn’t do for her previous coven. Now, this act brings her peace. Saying goodbye to Lilia so suddenly, after witnessing her recent journey, is heart-wrenching. Her decision was necessitated due to the Salem Seven relentlessly pursuing her and Jen throughout the entire episode. In the trial room, Lilia uses a Tower Reversed card, causing the entire space to flip upside-down. Tragically, she and the Salem Seven are impaled on the swords below. Rest in peace, Lilia.

In the last scene, we see a young Lilia, living in Sicily, engaged in her studies. This scene brings everything full circle, truly a classic example of closure!

In exactly one week, we’re counting down to the grand finale of Agatha All Along. It’s been quite a rollercoaster ride, and the surprises just keep on coming. The intricate web of chaos and destruction that resides within Agatha has dominated the season, and I can hardly contain my excitement to see how it all unfolds in a mind-blowing climax next week. I have no idea what’s going to happen, but I’m ready for a thrilling adventure!
