Agatha All Along episode 5 recap: "Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power"

In the fifth installment, the story begins with the Salem Seven witches embarking on a quest to locate Agatha along the Witch’s Path. Later, Lilia is depicted waking up unexpectedly within the boundaries of the Witch’s Path and informing her fellow witches about a vision she had, whereby she foresaw the Salem Seven approaching them. As per Lilia’s account, the Salem Seven managed to enter the Witch’s Path because they failed to secure its entrance after casting the summoning spell.

After Lilia tells her companions about it, she reveals who the Salem Seven witches are. Agatha had murdered her original coven, but she left their children alive. These grown-up offspring banded together to form a new coven, with the intention of avenging their mothers’ deaths at the hands of Agatha. As Lilia concludes her narrative, Agatha alerts the others in alarm that they must all flee. However, they barely manage to move before getting trapped by the Salem Seven. With no clear escape plan, Teen proposes they should use brooms to fly away. At first, everyone is hesitant about his idea, but they soon agree after hearing the terrifying screams of the Salem Seven witches.

In a swift motion, everyone snatches a tree branch and executes the rite to transform them into flying broomsticks. However, as Teen and Alice are preparing to initiate the rite, unexpectedly, one of the Salem Seven materializes and assaults them. Alice manages to subdue the witch, and they along with the rest of their coven successfully flee. But moments later, when they believe themselves to be safe, having soared above The Road, they are jerked back down by its powerful pull. Back on The Road, Teen spots a cabin in the distance. It’s their next challenge, but they must first reach it.

As they approach the cabin, one of the Salem Seven stands in their way. But this obstacle is short-lived as Agatha and her companions swiftly knock him unconscious by swooping down on them. Leaving their brooms behind, the witches hurry into the cabin. Recall how The Road undergoes a transformation for the coven? In this scenario, Agatha and the others are adorned in ’80s fashion.

As the gamer, I was in charge of Jen’s ordeal initially, then Alice’s followed. Now, it’s Agatha’s turn under the blood-red sky. Rio, my trusted companion, pointed out that Agatha’s trial was due to the blood moon’s appearance, a time when the barrier between life and death is at its thinnest, according to Lilia’s words. With Agatha being notorious for taking many lives, Rio believes she’d be ideal for communing with the deceased. In an uncanny turn of events, an Ouija board mysteriously fell to the ground, and our wristwatches began to beep synchronously. It seems the trial has now commenced in earnest.

In this séance, the group (the coven) is to communicate with the spirits through a Ouija board, and six conditions must be adhered to. Once Teen has outlined the rules, the coven starts using the Ouija board. Initially, it appears as if Mrs. Hart’s spirit possesses Agatha, but this isn’t the case; she was simply fooling everyone. After her prank ends, the coven resumes earnest communication through the Ouija board.

The next words the board spells out are “Death,” “Punish,” and “Agatha.” Huh? Agatha starts freaking out and lets go of the planchette. But wait! That was one of the rules. Don’t take your hand off the planchette. If so, a spirit will be released, and that’s exactly what happens. While everyone’s freaking out, Jen realizes what the Ouija board is trying to tell them. It wants them to punish Agatha, and if they do so, they’ll pass the trial. As the coven prepares to “punish” Agatha, Agatha suddenly disappears, and the lights go out.

Upon surveying their surroundings, they locate Agatha suspended on the ceiling, seemingly possessed. She descends to the floor, assaulting Teen initially before strangling Jen. Lilia locates the light switch and flips it up, illuminating the room once more. This action seems to displease the possessed Agatha, prompting her to flee. As they search for Agatha, they spot a spectral figure hovering above the stairs. Identifying itself as Evanora Harkness, a member of the Salemites, it reveals that it is Agatha’s mother and the spirit responsible for the possession!

Because spirits trapped in limbo often have incomplete tasks, the coven thinks that if they grant Evanora her wish, she’ll depart permanently. However, Evanora requests that Agatha stays with her, which surprises everyone given that she had been prepared to kill herself not so long ago. As Agatha begs her coven to take her along, Evanora takes control of her body once more and moves towards the other witches.

Instead, it’s Alice who swoops in and rescues everyone by invoking her abilities and directing them towards Agatha, forcing Evanora out of her body. However, as soon as Evanora departs, Agatha starts draining Alice’s powers. It seems that Agatha hasn’t truly reformed yet. As the other witches cry for Agatha to halt, the Ouija board beneath them begins to writhe, revealing a name once more.

The teen shouts “Nicholas Scratch,” which is another name for Agatha’s son. Hearing his name, Agatha abruptly halts her draining of Alice’s powers. As the young Nicholas calls out for her to cease, it’s already too late – Alice has perished. Agatha had taken all her power and vitality, effectively ending her life. The alarm starts ringing, and a way out of the cabin materializes. Although they successfully finished the trial, one witch is now gone.

Agatha steps out of the cabin to rejoin The Road, finding joy in regaining her abilities (or more accurately, Alice’s abilities). A teen challenges her about Alice’s death, and Agatha defends it as an accident. However, the teen remains skeptical. Lilia and Jen then pass by, implying that while they can’t entirely condemn Agatha for her actions because everyone desires to regain their powers.

The teenager expresses dissent towards Agatha’s viewpoint, making it plainly obvious. At that instant, there seems to be an epiphane in Agatha’s mind. She tells the teenager he reminds her of his mother. This comment infuriates the teenager, and suddenly, electricity sparks from his hands, indicating blue magic. He then takes control of Jen and Lilia, commanding them to seize Agatha and throw her into a pit filled with mud. After Agatha disappears completely beneath the ground, the teenager uses his magic again to thrust Jen and Lilia into the same mud trap. They too vanish entirely under the earth.

The last scene of the episode shows Teen wearing a crown similar to Wanda’s, aka the Scarlet Witch. Dun dun duuun! Teen’s true identity has been revealed. He’s one of Wanda’s sons, Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan.
