Agatha All Along episode 3 recap: "Through Many Miles/Of Tricks and Trials"

As a seasoned observer of the mystical and the macabre, I can’t help but feel a chill run down my spine as I delve into this captivating tale of Agatha Harkness. The events unfolding before us are nothing short of extraordinary, and it seems our dear Agatha is at the heart of it all.

Once again, we return! Gathered together is Agatha’s group of witches, ready to confront The Witches’ Road. Among them are divination witch Lilia Calderu, potions expert Jennifer Kale, blood and protection witch Alice Wu-Gulliver, as well as regular human Mrs. Hart, also known as Sharon.

In the upcoming adventure, we find Teen, a secretive youth, joining the witches’ group. He seems unable to discuss his identity or background with Agatha without being silenced. It suggests he might be under a magical enchantment. As the story unfolds, we may discover more about this mysterious condition in future episodes. In episode 3 of Agatha All Along, however, Agatha and her coven embark on their first test along The Witches’ Road, and it promises to be a challenging ordeal.

Spoilers ahead from Agatha All Along episode 3.

Agatha All Along episode 3 recap: "Through Many Miles/Of Tricks and Trials"

In the third installment, I find myself strolling along the enigmatic path known as The Road with my fellow coven members, debating the unpredictable ordeals that await us as we progress. Agatha, our resident sage, elucidates the mysteries of The Witches’ Road. She warns us that this path will challenge not only our physical prowess but also our understanding and mastery of the arcane arts, subjecting us to a trial for each skill we possess.

Jennifer feels uneasy about the trials because nobody can tap into their powers. It’s during this time that Teen enters the picture and suggests they resort to witchcraft. Curious, Jennifer queries Teen about his identity, but when he attempts to respond, his voice gets muffled. Lilia informs the group that a sigil was cast on him. Intrigued, Teen seeks clarification on what a sigil is. Alice, in turn, explains it’s a magical symbol used to conceal information. She suggests the sigil was placed on him to keep him hidden from other witches. Suspicion then falls upon Agatha as the rest of the coven points fingers at her for possibly being involved with the sigil.

In contrast, Agatha firmly asserts she didn’t place the sigil on Teen. Afterward, she steers the conversation towards their impending journey along The Road for their initial trial. It was revealed in episode 2 that both Agatha and Teen have personal motives for embarking on The Witches’ Road: Agatha seeks to regain her magical abilities, while Teen yearns for power. In this third episode, we discover the aspirations of the rest of the coven.

Jennifer seeks liberation from a magical constraint that inhibits her powers, Lilia aims to turn around her fortunes, and Alice yearns to uncover the truth behind her mother’s disappearance. However, there’s also Sharon, who strayed off the path and encountered trouble. Her handbag is being sucked into quicksand, causing her to attempt its rescue, but instead, she’s being dragged under as well. Fortunately, her coven members arrive in the nick of time to extract her from this perilous predicament.

Out of nowhere, a house emerges in the horizon, and they all make their way towards it. This is where the initial test will unfold. Upon crossing the house’s threshold, their attire transforms instantly. As per Agatha, the journey alters for the coven. Upon surveying their surroundings, they realize they are confined within the dwelling. A teenager discovers a card bearing a riddle, and it’s up to the group to solve it.

Sharon stumbles upon the solution to the riddle without meaning to, as she spots a wine bottle and glasses on a close-by table. Intrigued, she moves towards the bottle to uncork it but is alerted by Alice. Agatha then informs them that while consuming the wine could potentially lead to problems, they must do so if they wish to progress in the trial.

As Teen searches for a corkscrew to open the bottle, Jennifer approaches him with a warning about Agatha. She shares a rumor that Agatha exchanged her child in order to obtain the Book of the Damned (The Darkhold), but no one knows what became of her son. Some speculate he might be deceased, turned into a demon, or even an “emissary of Mephisto.” Now, Teen is starting to question Agatha’s motives and intentions.

Sharon was the one who took a sip from her glass as soon as the wine bottle was uncorked. The others watched in surprise, and then they heard an audible beep. Upon glancing around the room, they saw a timer set for thirty minutes. It seemed that the trial had begun. Everyone except Teen, who is too young, and Agatha, who looked suspicious, began drinking right away.

While lounging on the couch together, everyone notices Sharon’s face has unexpectedly ballooned. It appears they’ve all fallen victim to a poison from the wine they consumed! Now, their faces sport an inflated and flushed look. Thankfully, the swelling subsides promptly, yet this doesn’t guarantee the toxin has departed from their bodies. As per Jennifer’s explanation, they seem to have been affected by “Alewife’s Revenge.

Swelling in the face is only the first symptom; more severe conditions such as dizziness, confusion, motor dysfunction, rapid heartbeat, hallucinations, and ultimately death are yet to occur. Despite not being poisoned like the others due to not consuming the wine, Agatha becomes frightened and attempts to smash a window to flee. However, her companions prevent her from fully shattering the window, although it does crack slightly.

As I sit here among my gaming buddies, I can’t help but notice Agatha hasn’t touched her glass of wine. The tension builds as everyone urges her to drink, yet she holds firm. Only when I offer to take a sip does she finally relent. Makes me wonder if she truly cares about my health, right?

In small groups, they scoured for the necessary components of the antidote. Yet, some started having their inaugural hallucinations. To progress beyond this challenge, they had to shake off these illusions swiftly. Gathering the antidote ingredients, each one hurried to Jennifer in the kitchen. But upon closer inspection, they spotted water seeping through the partially broken window of Agatha. Now, they had to act faster to avoid being submerged by the incoming water.

In a different setting, Sharon is moved into the kitchen and positioned on a table. At this moment, the timer reads 3 minutes. The group, known as the coven, starts tossing various components into the kitchen sink, using it like a large cauldron. However, during this process, Agatha undergoes her inaugural hallucination. She hears an infant’s cry and spots a cradle in the kitchen corner. Upon closer inspection, she finds that instead of a baby, there is the Darkhold in the cradle. Despite being startled by what she has witnessed, Agatha quickly recovers and returns to assist with the concoction at the sink.

Oh dear, the potion isn’t taking effect as expected. It seems that one key ingredient is missing – the blood of an unpoisoned individual. Fortunately, we have Teen available. By incorporating Teen’s blood into the mixture, we can complete the antidote. Once they drink it, they should return to their normal state. However, there’s a twist! The timer is counting down, and with just 10 seconds left, I realize that Sharon hasn’t consumed the potion yet. What’s going on?

As they forcefully attempt to make Sharon drink the potion, a countdown ends simultaneously, causing the kitchen oven to swing open unexpectedly. Seemingly, this is the only viable exit from the house. Initially, no one is keen on using it. But when water starts gushing through the windows, Agatha and her coven colleagues reluctantly decide to pass through the oven.

They’ve completed the initial test and returned to Witches’ Road, but there’s an unsettling twist. One of their coven sisters, Mrs. Hart (also known as Sharon), has perished. With a diminished coven, how will they adapt? We’ll have to tune in to episode 4 of Agatha All Along, airing on Disney+ on Oct. 2, to uncover the answers.
