Agatha All Along casts a spell with impressive Week 1 viewership

As a seasoned gamer and Marvel fan with a heart full of nostalgia for the early days of Disney+, I must say that “Agatha All Along” has been quite the unexpected treat! The series has taken me on a thrilling ride filled with witchcraft, humor, and a dash of campy horror – something I haven’t experienced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time.

Marvel Studios’ recent venture into streaming television has reintroduced a character who played a significant role in its inaugural Disney Plus TV series. The show Agatha All Along features Kathryn Hahn reprising her role as Agatha Harkness, also known as Agnes, the seemingly amiable neighbor of Wanda Maximoff, who was secretly a centuries-old witch with sinister intentions to seize her magic. To clarify, this is indeed the same Agatha Harkness.

The story unfolds three years after WandaVision, with Agatha attempting to restore her life following the Scarlet Witch’s enchantment that kept her as Agnes in Westview. As she rebuilds, she gathers a fresh group of witches and embarks on the Witches’ Path to regain her magical powers. This eclectic band has captured viewers’ hearts due to their dysfunctional dynamics. Additionally, there’s the enigmatic Teen character, portrayed by Joe Locke from Heartstopper, who serves as the focal point of the season’s most intriguing mysteries.

Without a doubt, the intriguing nature of these questions is sparking enthusiasm among fans who eagerly await answers. Notably, the show’s viewer count at launch was quite remarkable.

Agatha All Along opens to a bewitching 9.3 million viewers

Disney has shared viewership figures from the debut episodes of ‘Agatha All Along’, and they’ve surpassed some predictions. Based on the studio’s report, the initial episode attracted a total of 9.3 million viewers within its first week, suggesting a highly promising launch for the series.

According to Deadline, the streaming platform calculates the viewership of an episode by dividing the total time it is streamed by its length. This method is similar to what Netflix and other streaming services use, and it’s the same way they measured shows like Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Acolyte, and Marvel’s Loki season 2.

Before the premiere of Agatha, there was uncertainty among many about how well it would perform. The past few years have been challenging for Marvel Studios because they’ve had to juggle their cinematic supremacy with their new streaming ventures, which led some projects to face issues in both quality and viewership. Despite high expectations for Agatha, there were concerns that its niche nature might limit its appeal, especially since the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been debated lately.

Additionally, the television series “The Acolyte” has been likened to Star Wars. This much-anticipated show garnered 11 million viewers during its debut week, only to have its run cut short by Disney Plus due to a surprising drop in viewership. Several factors contributed to this decline, such as some viewers feeling the quality dipped or simply not giving it a chance because it didn’t meet their expectations.

However, Agatha All Along presents a unique scenario. In contrast, viewers were well-prepared for its style thanks to the promotional content unveiled in recent months – a quirky, Gothic, exaggerated horror-comedy about witches. And that’s precisely what they received from the initial episodes.

It’s also worth remembering that Agatha All Along is based on a much lesser-known Marvel character than many of the previous Disney Plus shows. The mainstream audience’s only knowledge of the character came from WandaVision and that came out three years ago. So it would have been ridiculous to compare this one to the likes of Loki – a well-established and beloved MCU character who starred in multiple movies – or even The Acolyte given that Star Wars’ live-action shows are known for telling new stories (The Mandalorian). It was also likely much cheaper to produce given its reliance on practical effects and established sets.

Despite some fans’ negative perceptions towards the series due to how The Acolyte was handled by certain Star Wars and popular culture communities, the favorable buzz it generated, stemming from initial critical reviews and eventual fan adoration, significantly impacted its performance.

While Agatha’s viewership doesn’t match that of Loki or a Star Wars series, which have broader recognition among general audiences, it’s important to note that such high numbers were not necessarily anticipated for this show given its less popular character. However, these early ratings suggest a greater level of interest in the show than some critics had predicted. In essence, the show has surpassed expectations.

A generally strong start to the series’ run but a welcome overperformance for Agatha All Along.
