Be warned: the following contains major spoilers for the movie 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. If you haven’t seen it yet and don’t want the plot revealed, please don’t read any further.
The highly anticipated sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is officially scheduled for release in 2026, and it delivers another intense and surprisingly moving chapter in what’s already a fantastic horror series. After seeing Nia DaCosta’s excellent follow-up to Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later – and processing that cliffhanger ending! – I’m left with several questions I hope the next film will address.
Here are five questions about the series, covering everything from the possibility of a virus cure to where the characters might end up, and what I’d like to see explored in the upcoming 28 Years Later film. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

Are We Going To Learn More About A Cure, Or Did That Hope Die With Dr. Kelson?
Throughout the 28 Years Later series, people have wondered if a cure for the Rage virus could exist. The new film, The Bone Temple, significantly advances that idea. The unlikely bond between Dr. Ian Kelson, a reclusive scientist played by Ralph Fiennes, and Samson, an infected leader portrayed by Chi Lewis-Parry, suggests a cure might actually be within reach. Unfortunately, with Dr. Kelson’s death and Samson being the only one who knows about the potential cure, its future remains uncertain.
We don’t know what Kelson was working on before Sir Jimmy Crystal and his crew killed him, but I hope his death doesn’t mean there’s no chance for a better future. The next movie will likely explain things further, though given how dark this series is, I wouldn’t be shocked if that hope disappears.

Where Does Samson Go From Here?
Samson, a memorable character from The Bone Temple and first introduced last summer, is a fascinating case. Initially, I expected him to be similar to the intelligent zombies from George A. Romero’s Living Dead films. However, his story evolved into something surprisingly moving, as he changed from a purely aggressive creature into a character you could actually feel for.
Wow, I’m really curious to see what happens with Samson now! It looked like Dr. Kelson’s treatment actually worked, even though he got swarmed by infected on the train and all these memories flooded back. He still seemed like himself at the end, and he was clearly devoted to his friend. I’m especially wondering if the cure protected him from those bites and scratches he took during that crazy train fight. I really hope the next movie dives into that, because it could lead to some amazing storylines!

What Happened With The Baby After Spike Brought Her To Lindisfarne?
Going into the movie, I hoped to see more of the wider world established in the first film. However, the sequel, directed by Nia DaCosta, kept its focus tightly on just a few characters. I found myself thinking about the baby, Spike’s daughter, whom he brought back to his hometown of Lindisfarne after saving her mother. We never saw her, or Spike’s father Jamie, or anyone else from the community cut off by the causeway again.
I’m curious about what became of the child after the community took her in. Given that her mother was infected but she wasn’t, could she be the key to finding a cure? Also, it seems like Samson might be her father – am I right? If so, will he come searching for her now that he’s regained his senses?

How Will Kelly (Formerly Jimmy Ink) See The World Now That Her Perspective Has Changed?
Jimmy Ink, played by Erin Kellyman, had a very small role at the end of the 2025 film. However, in the new sequel, she became a central character. Her transformation from a loyal follower of Jimmy Crystal to embarking on a fresh start with Spike (and going by her real name, Kelly) was particularly impactful. Now, the question is, what will she do next?
Everything changes for Kelly when she and Spike crucify Jimmy in Dr. Kelson’s sanctuary, and I’m curious to see how she’s processing the fact that Jimmy wasn’t who he seemed. I’m hoping the final shot of Kelly and Spike fleeing from infected people, while Jim watches them, hints that she’ll be back for the next installment. Now that she has a clearer understanding of things, I wonder how she’ll react to the virus, the state of the world, and her own role in it all.

Finally, Where Are Selena And Hannah?
Honestly, when Jim popped up at the end of 28 Years Later, I wasn’t totally surprised. There’d been hints about Cillian Murphy being involved for ages! What did throw me, though, was that we didn’t see Selena, Jim’s daughter, or Hannah and Megan, who were with Jim at the end of 28 Days Later and stayed with him while he recovered. I always figured they’d be part of this story, so I’m really wondering what happened to them!
I’d be really disappointed if the next movie did something like Alien 3 and revealed that Selena and Hannah had died between films. They were key to the first movie’s strong story almost 25 years ago, and we deserve to see their stories continued.
Hopefully, we’ll get answers to these questions soon, as Deadline reports Sony is developing a third film in the 28 Years Later series—though the final title is still uncertain. The release date is currently unknown.
