After Top Gun: Maverick’s Success, Why Did The Team Make F1 With Brad Pitt Instead Of Tom Cruise?

In collaboration, Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski brought us the blockbuster hit “Top Gun: Maverick,” one of the most significant films in recent times. Interestingly, this wasn’t their first project together, as Cruise often teams up with a select group of directors. However, for Kosinski’s next venture post-“Maverick,” titled the racing drama “F1,” Brad Pitt takes the lead role previously held by Cruise. This shift might be beneficial, as suggested by the filmmakers.

Tom Cruise, famously known for his role in “Mission: Impossible”, has previously starred in racing films like “Days of Thunder”. It’s easy to envision him feeling comfortable driving a Formula One car, given that he performed most of the driving himself. However, director Joseph Kosinski hinted in an interview with GQ that Cruise might have gone a bit too far with his skills behind the wheel.

Tom consistently tests his boundaries, yet exhibits an extraordinary level of competence and skill. They both possess a knack for driving that seems innate. Admittedly, Tom might instill a sense of apprehension in us a tad more.

Tom Cruise is known for disliking the word “No.” Given his history of dismissing insurance companies who refused to allow him to perform certain stunts on screen, it’s tough to picture him accepting limitations when it comes to his driving scenes in films, let alone letting someone else handle them entirely.

In the upcoming movie “F1”, Brad Pitt is responsible for much of the driving scenes you’ll see in theaters this summer. However, it appears he doesn’t do every single one, leading the filmmakers to be relieved they didn’t collaborate with Cruise on this project. The action-vehicle supervisor for “F1”, Graham Kelly, who has worked with Tom Cruise previously, notes that Pitt knows when to set boundaries, whereas Cruise might not. He elaborated…

In another way of saying it: There would have been an accident if we continued. Tom takes things to the absolute extreme, which is truly nerve-wracking for me. You see, despite having worked on numerous Mission: Impossible movies with Tom, this is the most tense situation I’ve ever encountered. On the other hand, Brad is more cautious and aware of his limits, and I believe he wouldn’t hesitate to admit if something was too risky for him.

As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that I’ve often marveled at Tom Cruise’s unwavering commitment to performing his own stunts. However, in the case of “Days of Thunder,” it seems the filmmakers hinted that such dedication might not always lead to optimal results. Nevertheless, with whispers of a sequel on the horizon and Cruise’s insistence on taking the wheel, it’s clear he’ll have ample opportunity for more high-octane driving. And if rumors are to be believed, Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski could reteam once again for what appears to be an inevitable “Top Gun 3.
