Warning: This contains spoilers for the next-to-last episode of Season 1 of The Chair Company, available on HBO or HBO Max. If you haven’t watched it yet, proceed with caution!
Whenever I think The Chair Company has reached its most baffling or ridiculous moment, the show consistently surprises me with something even stranger. (Not literally, of course!) This incredibly odd show continues to deliver episodes that are hard to follow, building on previous storylines like Ron pushing Jeff, Mike’s awful home life, and even making Ron’s seemingly pointless pursuit of a goose named Tecca seem justified.
Any headway made by the Trosper family’s father was quickly reversed when it was discovered that the person he was after was also a key investor in Barb’s company – the same one she’d met with earlier in the season. At the same time, Ron began to understand the extent to which his actions had worsened his son Seth’s drinking problem, and it’s uncertain if Seth will ever return to work at Fisher Robay.
The show was renewed for a second season early on, so we probably won’t get complete answers to all the questions raised so far. However, I have a few guesses about what will happen in the finale, fully expecting them to be as inaccurate as my assumptions about Ron’s… visit to the adult store. Let’s dive in!

Ron Will Stay Quiet, But Natalie Will Be The One To Blow The Whistle On Alice Quintana
Although Ron is struggling with one of his children, Natalie has been surprisingly understanding of his often strange accusations and the flimsy evidence he presents. She understands how much this means to him and remembers the trouble caused by his past schemes when they went wrong.
It seems Ron has already decided to stay silent and supportive of Barb, starting when they dance together in Episode 7. He’s learning to appear happy for her successes, even though he knows it will be emotionally difficult for him. However, because Natalie hasn’t shown the same support for Barb’s work, I believe she’ll reveal Alice Quintana’s connections to Tecca, even if it harms Barb’s company.

The Family’s Former Dog Larby Will Factor Into Ron’s Mental Struggles
Ron’s behavior really says a lot about him – he apparently went and got a new dog, even before telling anyone he might have lost his job. Barb and Seth find it odd, but they’re used to his spontaneous decisions. The show revisited his love for dogs later in the episode, during a dance between Ron and Barb, where she commented on it.
I noticed Baby was sleeping so sweetly on the couch as I was heading out. I know you’re thinking about Larby, too.
I believe the dog we see Ron interacting with in the Episode 4 flashbacks is named Larby, and that it’s to Larby Ron was talking when Natalie overheard him. However, since the dog was already present when Ron told Barb about the unsettling Jeep Tours experience – which may have resulted in someone being seriously injured or killed – I doubt he got the dog because of stress from work.
It’s possible Larby is more connected to the difficult experiences in Ron’s past, whether those experiences were caused by himself or by others. The fact that the show gave Larby a name and highlighted Ron’s feelings about him near the season’s end suggests this connection is important.

Ron Will End Up In The Mayor’s Hot Tub
The Chair Company is a particularly unusual example of the ‘Chekhov’s gun’ trope – a plot device where seemingly minor details introduced early on become important later. Several elements initially presented as unimportant, like the Temblay’s group chat, Ron’s photos, and the bugs in the Trospers’ house, unexpectedly resurfaced and played a role in the story.
Given the way the show has been hinting at things, it feels likely the conversation Mayor Braccan and Mike are having – the one Mike is seemingly overhearing – will be clarified in the finale. If they were simply discussing returning to Mike’s house for a hot tub, that would be too simple. Therefore, I suspect Ron will somehow end up involved in whatever is happening.

Ron And Seth Will Do The Pee-Wee Dance Together
With his conspiracy theories likely wrapping up, Ron urgently needs to reconnect with his son, Seth, who has suffered because of Ron’s lack of attention. After Ron harshly rejected Seth’s simple request to recreate a cherished family memory in Episode 6 – a silly dance – Ron’s best chance to make things right is to do the dance himself, and do it openly, even publicly, without Seth needing to ask.
It feels like the show isn’t taking Seth’s drinking seriously enough, especially considering he’s a young character dealing with a significant issue. It’s surprising they aren’t addressing it more urgently with his parents. However, if any show could get away with downplaying such a problem with humor, it’s The Chair Company.
Let’s move on to something else for a moment, as it’s hard to predict how the show will resolve its storyline about sexual harassment, particularly now that Ron has left the company.
My Five Favorite Lines From The Chair Company Episode 7
- RON: “Baby bit the rat box.”
- BUG GUY: “Do you like turkey? Oh, God, they stack the turkey! It’s so good.”
- TERESA BONAVENTURA: “And they still let me take my picture every year. Mm. And this year, I wore a blue blazer and green pants, and I did a little bang which swooped around and made a little circle around my eye, and I looked like Daisy Duck.”
- NATALIE: “No, it’s like a new, nicer Wendy’s called Carvers, and it has ham.”
- DISGRUNTLED TAMBLAY CUSTOMER: “They made me think I could wish things into the world!”
I wish someone would publish a beautiful coffee table book filled with almost all of the dialogue from this show. I’d love to own it – and the table it would sit on! Just as long as Tecca wasn’t involved in creating it.
The Chair Company‘s Season 1 finale is set to air on HBO on Sunday, November 30, at 10:00 p.m. ET.
