After THAT A Woman of Substance cliffhanger, here’s what will happen in a second season

Everyone’s currently obsessed with a new historical drama, and it’s not what you might expect! Instead of shows like Wuthering Heights or Bridgerton, Channel 4’s A Woman of Substance, which premiered on March 11th, is capturing all the attention – and earning rave reviews from both viewers and critics.

The eight-episode show, adapted from Barbara Taylor Bradford’s 1979 novel, ended with an unresolved cliffhanger. So, what exactly transpired in the finale, and what can viewers anticipate in season two of A Woman of Substance?

A Woman of Substance ending spoilers follow.

Young Emma’s revenge

Okay, so in the previous timeline, young Emma heads over to the Fairley’s place thinking they want to team up with her. But then, out of nowhere, her old boss, Murgatroyd, actually sees me as an individual, which was pretty cool. I had her forgive him for being a jerk before, and it totally paid off! Turns out, it was a genius move because he spills the beans – the whole thing was a setup, and the Fairleys were planning to swindle me!

When she finally meets with her family, she shocks them by revealing she’s been planning ahead. She’s already made a deal with Lord Acton, bypassing the Fairleys and positioning herself as the one truly in charge of the business. Then, she confronts each family member about her specific issues with them.

The biggest shock comes when the family discovers she’s purchased Fairley Hall, their ancestral home. Immediately, she exercises her new power as the owner by evicting them, clearly relishing their misfortune. It’s a complete and satisfying act of revenge, and she seems to thoroughly enjoy it.

What to Read Next

Edwin, her ex-lover, then warned her that the conflict was far from over. He promised that the Fairley family would eventually reclaim their house, perhaps not for years, even decades, but at a time when she least expected it. And with that, it seemed, the situation was sealed.

Emma’s future achievements won’t bring her lasting happiness. Someone from the Fairley family will always be waiting to ruin things for her. She needs to be constantly on guard.

Older Emma’s showdown

It’s wild seeing everything come full circle! The latest episode brought us right back to that same dining room in Fairley Hall, but this time, older Emma was facing off against her own kids. It reminded me so much of Succession – she basically told them the £1 million they got for betraying her was all they’re getting from the family fortune. It’s clear she’s still using money to control people and keep them quiet, just like she did with the Fairleys all those years ago. It’s a really powerful, and honestly chilling, moment.

Okay, so what she did felt less like discipline and more like straight-up payback. It’s really messed up to see her treating her kids – even though they have been awful to her – the same way she was hurt. It just shows how broken family patterns can be, and honestly, it feels like she sees her own children as the enemy now, like they’ve completely betrayed her. It’s a really sad situation, and it’s hitting me hard as I play through this.

I just found out who’s getting everything from her estate – it’s her granddaughter, Paula, played by Mara Huf! But honestly, seeing Paula’s reaction, she doesn’t seem thrilled at all. She looks really conflicted and uncomfortable about inheriting it, which is… surprising, to say the least.

What’s more, Emma tells her daughter, Edwina, that Mac isn’t her dad – it’s actually Edwin Fairley.

Emma delivers a stinging insult, declaring that anyone with the Fairley name is untrustworthy. However, she’s blindsided by an even greater shock: after the business is legally transferred to Paula, Paula announces she secretly married Jim Fairley and is expecting a baby. Jim, clearly enjoying Emma’s distress, reveals this news to her outside the building.

After years of conflict, the two families who were once bitter enemies are now joined together through marriage. As a result, everything Emma worked so hard to build for her family and intended for Paula will now legally belong to the Fairleys.

He said, with a bit of a grin, “What’s hers is mine,” and it really hit me – that old threat Edwin made way back when had actually come true! After all this time, his great-grandson had finally managed to get Fairley Hall back for our family. It was amazing!

The betrayal! The double crossing! The look on Brenda Blethyn’s face! Incredible.

Now we just need to wait for series two, to find out what on Earth is going to happen next…

What will happen in season 2 of A Woman of Substance?

Following the dramatic ending of season one, everyone expected news about A Woman of Substance season two to arrive soon. However, as of today, Channel 4 hasn’t officially announced whether the show will be back for another series.

During the show’s launch, co-writer Roanne Bardsley mentioned that the first season only adapts the first half of the book. This suggests a second season could cover the remaining story.

The second book in the series, Hold the Dream, focuses on Paula becoming the company’s new leader, which allows the story to incorporate this new development into the overall plot.

We discuss spoilers from the book from this point.

The story follows Paula as she takes over the Harte department store chain. Predictably, her marriage to Jim Fairley fails, and she ultimately finds happiness with her childhood crush, Shane O’Neill – the grandson of the character Mac, who was updated for the 2026 television series.

Later in the series, a full book, A Man of Honour, tells Mac’s life story. It starts with his childhood as an orphan in County Kerry, Ireland, details his time in the navy, and follows how his path eventually crossed with Emma Harte’s.

Paula faces challenges not only from tricky family members – particularly her cousin Jonathan Ainsley – but also from a life that starts to mirror the painful experiences of her grandmother. Remembering her grandmother’s resilience and determination, Paula decides to face these difficulties with the same strength and courage.

Who would be in the cast for A Woman of Substance season 2?

So far, nothing is official. However, if the show gets another season, we expect Brenda Blethyn and Jessica Reynolds to reprise their roles as the older and younger versions of Emma, respectively, assuming the show continues to use a dual timeline.

Now that Paula is the new boss, we expect Mara Huf to reprise her role as Paula, and her husband, Toby Regbo, will likely return as well.

Unfortunately, Will Mellor won’t be returning as Emma’s father, as his character died in the fire at the Mill. It’s also unlikely we’ll see Leanne Best (Adele Fairley, the character struggling with alcoholism) or Philip Hill-Pearson (Joe Lowther, Emma’s husband who died in the war) appear again.

There’s still no official confirmation, and even if the project is approved, it will probably take a while before it’s released.

Like the Fairley family and their revenge – we’d be in for a long wait.

A Woman of Substance is available to stream in full on Channel 4 now.
