After Steph Curry's Olympic gold win, Adam Pally remains in awe of his 'Mr. Throwback' co-star

As I delve into the world of “Mr. Throwback,” I can’t help but marvel at the remarkable lives these talented individuals have led. Shruti Nwodim, with her roots deeply entrenched in the vibrant soil of ‘Real World,’ has blossomed into a comedic force to be reckoned with. On the other hand, we have the multifaceted Jake Pally, who seems to be living in an alternate reality, yet he embraces it with such zest and enthusiasm that I can’t help but feel a tinge of envy.

Early on, Adam Pally realized he and Steph Curry just look funny together.

Dan Aykroyd implies that there’s usually a distinct height difference in a successful comedy duo, with one partner being taller and the other shorter or more rounded in appearance. This is what Chris Pally suggests.

Could Pally and Curry potentially become the next iconic comedic duo, similar to Abbott and Costello or Laurel and Hardy? They’re aiming for this with their new series titled “Mr. Throwback.” The entire six-episode season was made available on Peacock starting Thursday, coincidentally falling on a weekend when Curry had an outstanding performance in France and led Team USA to win the gold medal in men’s basketball.

Friendly reminder: The following text has been rephrased for clarity and easier reading:

As a die-hard cinephile, having Curry as a friend this past year has turned every game I watch into an edge-of-the-seat experience. It’s left me in a constant state of heart-pounding excitement, because I care so deeply about his success. I find myself rooting for him even harder than before, hoping he’ll come out on top.

The 42-year-old humorist is amazed he’s pals with a top NBA star these days. They became friends a few years back when Curry was hosting the game show “About Last Night” alongside his spouse, Ayesha. Steph Curry and his wife, Daniella, were contestants, along with David Caspe – creator of the sitcom “Happy Endings,” where Pally played a role – and his wife, Casey Wilson.

Curry charms those who might ordinarily feel uneasy around him through his casual self-assuredness and wit, as Caspe and Pally discovered when they found that the four-time NBA champion had a knack for humor. They also learned that Curry, via his production company Unanimous Media, was interested in creating a fresh comedy series. He handed them a clean slate, and they responded with a show in mockumentary format centered around an exaggerated depiction of Curry, with Pally portraying his less-than-successful childhood basketball teammate.

In this time when shows like “30 for 30” and “The Last Dance” were popular, the format featuring mobile cameras and frequent interview segments seemed fitting for an athlete, especially considering Curry’s existing documentary on Apple TV+ titled “Underrated.” Additionally, practically speaking, these interviews provide a means to share numerous anecdotes without needing to visually reenact them. Furthermore, Pally, being a fan of mockumentaries by Christopher Guest, such as “Waiting for Guffman,” found this format appealing.

Certainly, there’s been a rich tradition of well-known basketball players attempting to shine on the silver screen. From Michael Jordan and LeBron James in the “Space Jam” movies, to Shaquille O’Neal in “Kazaam” or Kevin Garnett in “Uncut Gems,” many have given it a go. However, not all these on-screen ventures have proven to be winning performances.

Pally remarks, “I’ll give leeway to earlier generations, considering they didn’t have the constant scrutiny of cameras as we do.” Curry, having grown accustomed to cameras due to his father Dell Curry, a retired NBA player, finds himself at ease in front of them. He believes this familiarity is an advantage for Stephen, as he remains composed when faced with a camera, unlike some who might change their entire mood and behavior upon seeing one.

The series “Mr. Throwback” centers on the humorous contrast between Curry, a successful and jovial basketball star, and Danny Grossman, a formerly popular high school basketball player turned owner of a vintage sports memorabilia store in Chicago. Now struggling with debt to the Polish mafia and living a solitary life, Danny seeks Curry’s help to steal a valuable game jersey. However, when he is caught, he concocts an elaborate lie about his daughter Charlie having a serious illness to avoid trouble.

As a very kind person, Curry’s friendship tends to be generous, while Danny’s initial falsehood spirals out of control into something unbelievable.

Similarly to how Guest’s films are collaborative efforts, “Mr. Throwback” also thrives on teamwork. Caspe wisely chose to include two rising comediennes, Ego Nwodim and Ayden Mayeri, along with Pally and Curry.

Over the course of six consecutive seasons, Nwodim has left an indelible impression on “Saturday Night Live”. Her character, “Lisa from Temecula”, notably caused her fellow performers and guest host Pedro Pascal to crack up. An adept improviser, she’s found in settings like the podcast “Comedy Bang! Bang!” where she frequently portrays eccentric, unruly characters. However, in contrast to these roles, Nwodim plays Kimberly – the stern and no-nonsense CEO of a fictitious company, Curry Up and Wait. In this role, she stands as the straight man amidst the absurdity, with little tolerance for nonsense.

According to Nwodim, aged 36, living in Brooklyn, there’s a common belief that it isn’t possible for straight individuals to be amusing and entertaining. However, she believes that being funny as a straight person is a unique talent and can sometimes be more challenging than being humorous while belonging to a group considered unusual or chaotic.

No matter what role she takes on, Nwodim always manages to be hilarious; during our Zoom conversation, she veered off topic discussing the origins of words and slang, and admitted to having an issue with keeping her browser tabs closed – currently, her iPhone has a whopping 498 tabs open. Her most memorable experience in Paris was the thrill of socializing with athletes at the Team USA residence and meeting Snoop Dogg during the Olympics frenzy.

In a new twist, she’s shared that she’s never been part of a mockumentary before, but in her real-life interactions with friends, she often behaves as if she’s starring in a docuseries – addressing an unseen camera and offering contradictory confessionals to what she’s just said to someone.

“She explains that she does this behavior because, as a child, she watched a lot of ‘The Real World’,” is one way to paraphrase the original sentence in a natural and easy-to-read manner. The paraphrased sentence retains the meaning while providing a more conversational tone.

Nwodim is thrilled about the approaching 50th season of “SNL,” as she believes it will be filled with a vibrant, energetic atmosphere. She expresses that having numerous people moving around at 8H will make things lively and intriguing. In her opinion, this season seems destined to turn into an exhilarating celebration.

As a movie buff, I must say that one captivating aspect of “Mr. Throwback” is the portrayal of Mayeri as Danny’s ex-wife, Sam. In this film, she unwittingly becomes involved in Danny’s elaborate deception and even seems to relish Curry financing her dreams. Interestingly, Mayeri played a character dealing with a similar situation in “I Love That For You,” the short-lived Showtime series alongside Vanessa Bayer, where the plot revolved around a character concealing a terminal illness.

“Right away I was like, is this gonna be weird that this is my lane now?” Mayeri laughs.

Initially, when the Oakland native learned about the role, her thoughts were: “Oh, it’s an ex-wife in a TV comedy, will I just be constantly scolding him?” However, upon reading the script, she discovered that her character was mischievous, humorous, and participated in all the shenanigans. This made her say, “This is the best thing I’ve ever read!”

Although the show appeared casual and improvised, it was actually well-scripted with minimal on-the-spot additions. The meticulously crafted scripts were developed in a writers’ room by Daniel and Matthew Libman, former members of “Happy Endings”. However, Pally and Caspe foster a playful atmosphere during filming where anything can potentially be incorporated.

Moreover, many members of the cast have experience in improvisation, including Curry who previously performed in an improv show in Chicago, which was arranged by his coach Steve Kerr when the Golden State Warriors were experiencing a rough patch. Similarly, Tracy Letts, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright portraying Danny’s estranged father on “Mr. Throwback,” is no stranger to improvisation. He has shared the stage with renowned Chicago improvisers T.J. Jagodowski and Dave Pasquesi (the latter is part of the series), and he delivers some of the show’s most humorous lines, notably a joke about the necessity of taking a bowel movement.

Pally is astonished by his unexpected bond with Letts and finds it troubling when, “after reading a critique he doesn’t entirely concur with, he receives a harsh text from the author of ‘August: Osage County.'”

Let’s add that Letts gives the series a significant dramatic weight, which is a part of the strategy Palicky and the writers implemented by combining the ridiculously comical with a sincere narrative about generational addiction, sorrow, and forgiveness. Palicky attributes this serious tone to the fact that they are all older now, all with expanding families and personal wounds from life experiences.

Following the completion of the latest season of the Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy show “FUBAR” this coming summer, he plans to jump right into filming the sequel of “Mr. Throwback” alongside his Olympic champion friend.

“I don’t know what reality I’m in,” Pally says, “but I sure do like it.”
