After ‘Project Hail Mary,’ Danny Boyle’s ‘Sunshine’ Is the Perfect Follow-up

Ryan Gosling’s new movie, Project Hail Mary, is doing very well in theaters right now. Once you’ve seen this optimistic sci-fi film, if you’re looking for something a bit more intense, a great option will be available to stream for free next week.

While Project Hail Mary is a hopeful story about working together to survive, this 2007 sci-fi thriller takes a much darker approach. Both stories involve a team trying to save the sun, but that’s where the similarities stop. This film is a grim exploration of the conflict between science and religion, and it portrays a particularly intense and disturbing case of claustrophobia and its effects on a group of people.

As a huge sci-fi fan, I’ve always loved Danny Boyle’s Sunshine, with Cillian Murphy giving a fantastic performance. It’s actually a perfect pairing with Project Hail Mary – where that film is hopeful and energetic, Sunshine is its darker, more contemplative counterpart. If you haven’t seen this incredible thriller, or if you’re like me and love revisiting it, great news! It’s going to be streaming on Tubi starting April 1st.

Problem-solving Optimism vs. Existential Dread

In Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a character tasked with discovering why a strange substance is causing the Sun’s light to fade. He soon meets an alien named Rocky, who is facing the same problem. Together, they team up to find a solution, highlighting the novel’s theme that understanding and solving the unknown is possible through collaboration.

Unlike the hopeful premise of Sunshine, the crew of the Icarus II discovers a dark secret when they find the lost ship, Icarus I. Instead of a welcoming alien presence, they encounter Captain Pinbacker, who has descended into madness. He’s killed his own crew and believes their mission to reignite the Sun is a blasphemy. Pinbacker views the mysteries of space with terror, treating the Sun as a sacred, untouchable object.

While Project Hail Mary suggests that collaboration and perseverance can overcome any challenge, Sunshine explores the idea that some mysteries are beyond our grasp. These films offer very different perspectives, making both valuable viewing experiences.

‘Sunshine’ Is the Perfect Blend of Sci-Fi and Horror

With its compelling story and John Murphy’s memorable music, Sunshine is a sci-fi film that stays with you, prompting reflection on life and death. You can now watch it for free on Tubi starting April 1st.
