After Picard, Jeri Ryan was pitched a Star Trek show that wasn’t Star Trek: Legacy
As a lifelong Star Trek fan who’s spent countless hours debating warp speeds and Klingon dialects with fellow enthusiasts, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and frustration at Jeri Ryan’s latest revelation about a potential Captain Seven show. On one hand, the mere mention of the phrase “Captain Seven” is enough to send shivers down any Trekkie’s spine. But on the other, hearing that an idea was pitched for a show that wasn’t what we, the fans, want is like being offered a plate of tribble stew when you were expecting prime Romulan ale.
It’s undeniable that the desire for a Star Trek: Legacy series persists among fans. Whether they discuss it on social platforms or in person at gatherings such as Spacecon in San Antonio, TX, it remains a popular topic. At a recent Star Trek: Voyager panel featuring Jeri Ryan, Garrett Wang, and Robert Duncan McNeill, someone posed an unexpected question not related to Legacy. When asked about the possibility of a Captain Seven show, Ryan’s response left everyone astonished. [as reported by Trekmovie] Interestingly, Ryan hinted at something in her answer.
There has been talk. And there was an idea that was actually pitched to me after Picard ended, which was not the Legacy show that I know the fans are asking for, that I want to do. But it just wasn’t me… It didn’t feel like the right kind of thing… But there has been talk. And if there is one thing I have learned with this franchise it is: never say never. You never know.
It’s plain to see that Ryan is firm about pursuing Legacy, as the concept proposed to her didn’t align with her preferences. Her choice to forgo the chance to create her own Star Trek series must have been a tough one, reflecting how deeply she feels connected to Legacy.
Fans find it challenging to accept when proposed series don’t align with their expectations. For instance, Star Trek creators had an idea for a show featuring Ryan, and given her potential involvement, it was likely to progress into production. This raises a question: why would producers present a show that fans aren’t keen on, rather than one they eagerly anticipate?
Ryan didn’t provide specific details about the kind of show being proposed, but she remains optimistic with her “never say never” attitude. However, we’ve been hearing that phrase for quite a while now, and there’s another lesson from Star Trek: if those in control don’t want something to occur, it simply won’t happen, regardless of the audience’s interest.
