After Only 4 Episodes, Dutton Ranch Is Officially A Failure For Beth & Rip

Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler’s attempt to run the Dutton Ranch in Texas failed after only four episodes. According to the show’s timeline, they had been living in Rio Paloma for six months when the ranch went bankrupt, but the failure wasn’t due to anything they did wrong.

In the second episode of Dutton Ranch, a seemingly small event set the stage for future trouble for Beth and Rip. They purchased a bull for $10,000 at an auction, where they crossed paths with Beulah Jackson from the 10-Petals Ranch. The bull was later delivered to the Dutton Ranch and added to Beth and Rip’s valuable herd of black Angus cattle.

In the third episode of Dutton Ranch, Rip found out his cattle had foot-and-mouth disease – the first case in the U.S. in decades. Veterinarian Everett McKinney confirmed the diagnosis, leaving Rip and Beth with the devastating choice to eliminate their entire herd, completely disrupting life at Rio Paloma.

The Dutton Ranch Is A Tragic Failure For Beth & Rip

It was devastating to watch the Duttons have to make such a terrible decision. They had no choice but to kill their entire herd of black angus cattle. They dug a pit and Rip… Rip had to shoot each one individually. It completely broke him, seeing all those innocent animals fall. It was awful to witness, and you could tell it would stay with him forever.

By the end of the fourth episode of Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip realized they had lost everything they’d worked for. They had put all their money and effort into the ranch, hoping to start a business selling black angus beef. Beth was especially pleased, having just secured a deal to supply steaks to a fancy restaurant in Dallas.

Without any cattle remaining, the Dutton Ranch is effectively finished, existing only as a legacy. Beth and Rip face an immediate loss of millions in potential income and can’t quickly rebuild their herd. The Dutton-Wheeler family’s attempt to ranch in Texas has failed completely.

Beth discovered the bull they bought was sold to them with fake medical records. Rip and Beth angrily retaliated against the seller, but while getting revenge felt good at the moment, it doesn’t fix their money problems.

How Beth & Rip Can Save The Dutton Ranch

Beth and Rip are facing limited choices as they try to protect the Dutton Ranch and build a future in South Texas. Going back to Montana isn’t an option for them within the show’s storyline, as everything they knew there is gone. Since the Dutton Ranch series takes place in Texas as a continuation of Yellowstone, Beth and Rip will remain in the Lone Star State.

Beth Dutton once had a successful and lucrative career in banking, making her financially independent. However, she left it all behind during the events of Yellowstone. While she could likely return to the corporate world, doing so would mean being separated from Rip and the Dutton Ranch, which would make her unhappy.

I’ve been thinking about how things could be resolved, and I keep coming back to 10-Petals Ranch. It turns out Beulah Jackson and her son, Joaquin Reyes, were actually trying to buy the Edwards Ranch before Beth and Rip got to it – the land that’s now the Dutton Ranch. They had plans for their black angus cattle, but that deal fell through, so their original goal is no longer possible.

Selling the Dutton Ranch to Beulah Jackson might help Beth and Rip recover their financial losses, but it’s unclear what Beulah would gain without the cattle. It’s possible Beulah’s company, 10-Petals, simply wants to increase their land holdings by taking over the ranch. However, this doesn’t address what Beth and Rip will do after the sale.

As a long-time viewer, I’m really on the edge of my seat with Beth and Rip. They’re facing a situation unlike anything we’ve seen before, and honestly, I’m worried about what it means for their future on the ranch. I’m incredibly curious to see how things unfold – it feels like this could be the big turning point Natalie Alyn Lind mentioned in her ScreenRant interview, the one that really shakes up the Dutton family’s story.

The final episodes of Dutton Ranch season one will likely take Beth and Rip’s storyline in Rio Paloma in surprising new directions, especially now that the Dutton-Wheelers’ attempt at ranching in Texas has ended in failure.
