After Netflix’s Failed Attempts, Blumhouse Wins Adaptation Rights To Popular Comic Book Horror Series

Blumhouse will now adapt a popular comic book series after Netflix chose not to pursue the project.

Netflix announced in 2021 that it would be making a series based on the popular comic book Something is Killing the Children. Created by James Tynion IV and artist Werther Dell’Edera, the comic has become a major success in the horror genre, often compared to AMC’s The Walking Dead. It has sold over 5 million copies worldwide and earned numerous Eisner Awards, including three consecutive Best Writer awards for James Tynion IV.

Blumhouse has announced it’s making both a live-action movie and an animated series for adults based on the comic book series Something is Killing the Children. The animated series will be led by James Tynion, one of the creators of the original comic.

Jason Blum, the founder of Blumhouse, shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming adaptations, noting that both audiences and critics have consistently lauded Something is Killing the Children.

He really liked the horror comic, saying it plays on our deepest fears and creates a captivating world. He especially enjoyed the introduction of Erica Slaughter, a strong and capable hero who’s exactly what we need when facing scary monsters.

Tynion spoke about the excitement over this deal by saying the following:

James Tynion IV calls the comic Something is Killing the Children a turning point in his life and work. He’s thrilled to be working with Jason Blum and Blumhouse – known for their expertise in horror – because they truly understand the potential of the story and characters he and artist Werther Dell’Edera created. He’s excited for everyone to see what they’ve come up with together.

Something is Killing the Children is a comic book series that began in September 2019, published by BOOM! Studios. It centers around Eric Slaughter, a monster hunter dedicated to protecting children.

Originally, Netflix planned to adapt the series with Trevor Macy and Mike Flanagan (known for Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House) as writers and executive producers. However, the project didn’t move forward because Netflix decided to pursue a different approach.

Fans were excited when the creators of Dark, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, were set to adapt the story. However, Netflix cancelled the live-action series by the end of 2024.

Blumhouse is reviving plans to adapt the comic book series Something is Killing the Children, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet. Stephen Christy, James Tynion IV, and Werther Dell’Edera will produce the film, with Jason Blum overseeing it. Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek will serve as executive producers. Tynion and Dell’Edera will also be executive producers on the animated series.
