Caution: Episode 2 of Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 titled “Dante’s Inferno” has been released on Peacock. If you want to avoid spoilers, it might be best to steer clear of this discussion! Enjoy your spoiler-free viewing experience!
2025’s TV lineup saw Law & Order: Organized Crime kick off Season 5 in high gear, culminating in the premiere’s dramatic close with Elliot and a young girl involved in a heart-wrenching car accident. The subsequent episode maintained this level of intensity as the storyline deepened, with Bunny gravely injured at the hospital, Elliot slipping into a coma initially, and the Stabler family rallying around him at the hospital. Notably, Mariska Hargitay, who’s known for her role in SVU, made a guest appearance to support Elliot as well.
Initially, there was a notable shift away from the somber tone, largely due to Randall Stabler’s unexpected advance towards Benson. Later, in reference to this incident, new Season 5 regular Dean Norris shared insights with TopMob, even going so far as to discuss it with Christopher Meloni himself.
Following the Special Victims Unit captain introducing herself and sharing some background about their past partnership and friendship with Elliot, Randall steered the discussion towards an unexpected topic. With his brother lying unconscious, he suggested preparing Olivia a serving of his renowned brisket. Mariska Hargitay’s reaction was charmingly surprised, but it was her agreement to bring coleslaw that surprisingly prompted Elliot to regain consciousness.
It turned out even more enjoyable for me that Christopher Meloni collaborated on “Dante’s Inferno” with showrunner and former “Breaking Bad” contributor John Shiban. During my conversation with Norris regarding the increased realism in this season of “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” he shared insights about the witty brisket exchange between Randall and Benson.
I found that absolutely hilarious, and once again, that’s Chris Meloni’s brilliant writing at work. That particular scene always gets me laughing because Randall, though he’s a bit rough around the edges, isn’t the most suave guy. It’s funny how he sets his sights on her instantly and resorts to what might be the least romantic pickup line ever – “Hey, would you like some brisket?” [laughs] I think it’s brilliantly written.
Since I had been eager for Benson to meet Randall Stabler ever since Dean Norris was cast in Season 4 back in 2023, I was quite thrilled by the peculiarity of the eldest Stabler sibling making his move on Elliot’s brother at that exact moment and using that particular method to flirt. Frankly, it might not have been the most refined approach with Olivia Benson, but there must be a woman out there who would certainly be captivated by Randall’s invitation for brisket.
