Last week, Jennifer Lopez appeared on The Howard Stern Show, where Howard Stern asked her if she ever regretted turning down a particular acting role. She responded by saying:

You know, Adrian Lyne actually sent me the script for ‘Unfaithful’ first. I ended up passing on it because, honestly, it just didn’t grab me at the time. Then he really turned it around, and Diane Lane got an Oscar nomination! It’s funny how things work out. It still kind of bugs me, though – I often wonder why I didn’t work with Adrian Lyne on that one. I really have no idea what I was thinking back then, honestly. Who knows what was going on with me at the time?

If you’re not familiar with Adrian Lyne, he’s a well-known director responsible for iconic films like Flashdance, Fatal Attraction, Lolita, and more recently, Deep Water starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. When he offered Jennifer Lopez the lead role in Unfaithful, she initially turned it down, finding the script unappealing. However, after the film’s success and Diane Lane’s Best Actress nomination, Lopez has regretted her decision. She’s even joked about how much she regrets it, saying she feels like she wants to “shoot my toe off” just thinking about it.

When Entertainment Tonight caught Diane Lane up to speed while she was at the Newport Beach Film Festival to receive the “Icon Award,” she responded with her two cents on why she said yes to Unfaithful. As she said:

I missed the interview, but I’m happy to hear it went well. It was someone’s chance to shine, and now it was mine. I recently met the director, Adrian Lyne, and felt confident that Allstate would handle things professionally. It felt like a sure thing, predictable like a Barry White song, and I was immediately on board.

Diane Lane’s performance in Unfaithful was a major success, earning her critical praise and bringing in a large audience. The film stars Lane and Richard Gere as a married couple with an eight-year-old child, living in New York City. Lane plays Connie, who begins an affair with a charming French man while feeling unfulfilled in her marriage to Edward, played by Gere.

Jennifer Lopez generated Oscar talk for her 2019 film Hustlers, but she wasn’t nominated for an Academy Award. She admitted being disappointed after receiving so much public support.
