Fans of Boston Blue can look forward to the show’s return in February 2026, bringing back Danny, his son Sean, and the entire Silver family – including their famous dinners. There’s also a chance viewers will learn more about other members of the Reagan family, like Danny’s older son, Jack. The show recently provided an update on Jack before its winter break, and an executive producer has explained the creative decision to keep him somewhat separated from the rest of the family.
Tony Terraciano played Jack Reagan on Blue Bloods for all 14 seasons, but his role decreased starting in Season 9 when his character went off to college and started building his own life. The midseason finale of Boston Blue revealed Jack was in Africa volunteering with Doctors Without Borders. This came as a surprise, and Brandon Sonnier, an executive producer and co-creator of the show, explained to TVLine why it was important to establish where Jack was.
We make a point of following what the other family members are up to in the Blue Bloods world, as our show builds on that foundation. It’s significant that Jack is studying medicine abroad.
As a big fan, I was so relieved to finally get some news about Jack! We hadn’t heard much about him since Boston Blue kicked off, so it was great to see where he’s been. And honestly, Sonnier’s right – it’s a huge deal that he’s pursuing medicine instead of following his family into law enforcement like the Reagans. I especially loved hearing that they’re sending him to Africa with Doctors Without Borders instead of just having him go to med school here in the States. Sonnier explained that decision was…
It’s important to remember Danny has two sons. We placed Jack far away partly for practical reasons – it allows Danny to concentrate on Sean, as he can’t currently do much to help Jack, who is doing very well. This family is committed to service, and this move felt like a way for Jack to fulfill that commitment while also serving the needs of the story we’re creating, at least for the time being.
While I’d really like to see Jack, I understand why it’s difficult right now. Danny’s oldest son is busy with his career abroad, so it’s good he can spend quality time with his youngest while he’s nearby. Plus, Danny is already juggling a lot – looking after Sean and starting a new job in a new city. Any unexpected issues with Sean could really complicate things for him.
From what the executive producer said, it doesn’t look like Jack will be on Boston Blue in the near future, although a family visit is still possible. As a fan, I really enjoy these small glimpses into the lives of characters from the Blue Bloods world.
Okay, so even though I miss seeing Jack on screen, it’s been great to see some familiar faces pop up in the new season of Boston Blue. Bridget Moynahan was back as Erin Reagan right away, and Marisa Ramirez has been around as Maria Baez too, which is awesome. Donnie Wahlberg even said they’re working on getting Tom Selleck back as Frank Reagan – fingers crossed! Honestly, there are so many original characters I’d love to see again. Luckily, Boston Blue got renewed for a second season, so there’s still hope that Jack and others will make a return. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
