I remember when it first came out in 2016 – it quickly gained a huge following! It felt like an era ended when it wrapped up in 2025, though honestly, for a lot of us, the story doesn’t really feel over.
As a huge fan of the show, I was completely swept up in the buzz after the season finale. It was split into parts, which was a little weird, but then this wild theory started circulating on social media – #ConformityGate. Basically, people think the finale we saw wasn’t real, but a construct of Vecna’s mind! They’re convinced there’s one final episode still to come. At first, everyone predicted it would drop on January 7th, but when that date came and went, they quickly shifted gears and started saying January 12th would be the day. It’s been a rollercoaster of anticipation, honestly!
It’s common for fans to search for hidden clues and develop theories about their favorite things, and many fandoms enjoy this. Taylor Swift’s fans are well-known for dissecting her re-recorded albums, especially Reputation. Other fandoms famous for their theories include those dedicated to Harry Potter (exploring character intentions and the intricate storyline), the Marvel Cinematic Universe (predicting potential new shows and movies), The Simpsons (known for seemingly predicting future events), and franchises like Star Wars, Doctor Who, Supernatural, and Game of Thrones.
The popular show Stranger Things has recently concluded, and its final episode left many viewers questioning what they saw. While the season finale tied up loose ends for all the characters and even showed a glimpse into their future after the events of the series, some fans suspect certain details weren’t genuine. These include inconsistencies like the unusual orange color of the school uniforms, the seating arrangement at graduation, and the unexplained absence of a character named Vickie, leading some to believe these were deliberate clues or misdirections.
Despite some initial confusion, Netflix confirmed that all episodes of Stranger Things are now available. The streaming service also announced its upcoming shows for 2026, teasing “Your future is on its way” on January 7th. However, fans quickly connected this announcement to theories surrounding the “Conformity Gate” within the Stranger Things universe.
Despite previous disappointments, some fans still think a hidden episode is out there. They now believe they overlooked clues, and the episode might actually be released on Monday, January 12th. This date also happens to be when the documentary One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 is scheduled to come out.
A fan believes the unreleased episode, dubbed “ConformityGate,” is genuine, despite never airing. User @themattyverse posted on X that this episode represents the real conclusion of the story, and we’ll never see the characters find a way out. They point to several unexplained connections as evidence, suggesting the episode exists but will remain hidden because the creator, “Mike,” has given up and accepted a bleak outcome.
Someone else confirmed the updated release date of January 12th, noting a connection to the show’s storyline. They pointed out that Vecna requires twelve victims, the documentary episode is scheduled for January 12th, and twelve people are pursued by Vecna in the Upside Down, referring to these individuals as ‘the twelve victims Vecna needed’.
The final episode sees Joyce, Will, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Steve, Jonathan, Robin, and Nancy venture into the Upside Down to defeat Vecna and the Mind Flayer. Eleven, Hopper, and Kali join them, along with Max, who becomes trapped in Henry’s mental world, and Murray.
Stranger Things Had Other Plans
Even with all the talk about changes behind the scenes, Stranger Things isn’t ending. We’ll see more of the story through a documentary and an upcoming animated series called Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, plus another spinoff series that’s still in development.
Matt Duffer has confirmed that a spin-off series is in development. While still in the early stages, he hinted that it will feature new characters, a new location, and a separate storyline, but will still have some connection to the original show. He emphasized that they intentionally wanted to conclude the story of Hawkins, the Upside Down, and the main characters, bringing that part of the narrative to a definite end.
Stranger Things is streaming on Netflix.
