After a 4 year delay, The Rise of Skywalker adaptation is coming in February

As a gamer with a heart full of nostalgia for the Star Wars saga, I must say that the announcement of the long-awaited “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Adaptation” by Marvel has sent shivers down my spine! After a grueling 4-year wait, it’s finally time to immerse myself once more in the galaxy far, far away.

Starting from the very beginning, Marvel Comics has been adapting the Star Wars movies, and at last, by February 2025, fans can anticipate the long-awaited comic version of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Simultaneously launching with an enthralling comics storyline, there will be a wealth of entertainment to savor during the early months of 2025.

After a 4 year delay, The Rise of Skywalker Adaptation is coming.

Star Wars Episode IX was packed with unexpected events, thrilling sequences, and heart-pounding moments. The comic book version is set to capture this exhilaration effectively. Marvel has confirmed that the creative team remains unchanged. Illustrator Will Sliney, who demonstrated his skills with the 25th Anniversary edition of The Phantom Menace and projects like Doctor Aphra and Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren, will be part of this endeavor. Simultaneously, writer Jody Houser, acclaimed for her work on Star Wars: Thrawn Alliances and the comic adaptation of Obi-Wan Kenobi series, is also on board. This duo promises to deliver an exceptional interpretation of the project.

So far, we’ve gathered information about this upcoming series, which is a five-issue limited run. It promises to revisit the Resistance’s final stand, the unexpected return of Emperor Palpatine, and additional content not included in the movie. This new content has been anticipated since its announcement in 2020. With comic adaptations seemingly repetitive now, it’s thrilling to finally see these fresh scenes unfold. We can refer to the film’s novelization for hints about what these new scenes might entail. Rae Carson published a book related to this in 2020, offering some intriguing insights.

Some include Luke and Leia’s brother-sister relationship is portrayed both in memories and in the Force. Rey receives counsel about the Force from Maz Kanata. Lando opens up more about the daughter he lost to the First Order, while Chewie reckons with guilt when thinking of Ben Solo.

The tale concludes with a multitude of characters and interwoven plots, and editor Mark Paniccia commends the potency of the screenplay that Jody has crafted.

There’s a resurgence of interest in these characters, especially Kylo Ren, Darth Vader’s blood heir. Jody’s script captures the impact of these iconic moments between the film’s heroes and villains, while the art by Will Sliney and dazzling colors by Guru-eFX give a visually unique experience of this epic finale.

The covers for these issues live up to expectations, boasting stunning artwork by Phil Noto, Jodie Muir, and Brian Stelfreeze. Two of them highlight the dark side prominently, featuring Kylo Ren and Emperor Palpatine at the forefront. In one cover, Kylo Ren is surrounded by the Knights of Ren, wielding his lightsaber ominously over General Hux, with General Pryde unscathed in his other hand. Darth Vader’s mask and the Sith wayfinder are at his feet. On another cover, Palpatine stands before a backdrop of his hidden Star Destroyer fleet. Additional artworks depict significant moments like Kylo’s attack on Mustafar, the discovery of the wayfinder, or Rey sabotaging a TIE fighter near Ochi’s ship. A more intricate piece showcases members of the Resistance filling out Rey’s profile. My personal favorite is a split scene showing Rey’s Jedi training on one side and Leia’s on the other, creating a seated figure in meditation when viewed together.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Adaptation arrives at comic shops on February 26, 2025.
