There’s a lot to celebrate for Star Trek fans this year – the franchise is turning 60! And there’s even more exciting news: IDW Publishing is releasing a special art book showcasing the amazing artwork from their Star Trek comics.
I’m so excited! ComicsBeat just showed off a preview of The Art of Star Trek & Defiant, and it looks incredible. It’s a huge art book – featuring work from over 65 artists! – and it’s coming out in hardcover on June 16, 2026. According to IDW, it’s going to be a really deep dive into the art of Star Trek, showing off everything from the covers and concept designs to the art inside the comics themselves. They’re even including interviews with some of the artists, where they talk about their work and what makes Star Trek so special to them. I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
Star Trek Celebrates 60th Anniversary with New Defiant Art Book
Featuring artwork by Ramon Rosanas, Francesco Francavilla, Rachael Stott, Malachi Ward, JK Woodward, Liana Kangas, Ángel Unzueta, Angel Hernandez, Marcus To, Megan Levens, and others, The Art of Star Trek & Defiant is a 216-page book. It also includes insights and commentary from Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing.
The comic series, which takes place between Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Nemesis, started in 2022. Defiant followed in 2023 and continued until 2025, acting as both a spin-off and a connection to the original Star Trek series. IDW described Defiant as a blend of The Dirty Dozen and Star Trek, featuring Worf of House Martok leading a crew on the U.S.S. Defiant. Their mission: to locate and stop a mysterious leader who heads a cult dedicated to genocide.
I was really sad to see Defiant end after 27 issues, but I was so happy when IDW released Star Trek: Lore War in January – it finally collected the whole story! And now, with the art book coming out this summer, we’re going to get an even better look behind the scenes at both Defiant and the connected series. It’s awesome that the entire story is now available in trade paperbacks, so we can really appreciate everything that happened.
IDW Reveals Big Plans for Star Trek’s Landmark Anniversary
IDW Publishing has released a new series of art books, including The Art of Star Trek & Defiant. Coming on May 5, 2026, is The Art of Star Trek: Lower Decks, which will offer a detailed look at the show’s characters, spaceships, and environments. The book will also feature interviews with the artists discussing the entire creative process.
IDW Publishing has big plans to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Star Trek with its comic books. A special new issue will include fresh stories from the writers and artists who created the beloved characters and captains, and several new Star Trek comic series will be released throughout the year. We’ll learn more about IDW’s plans for Star Trek in 2026 in the months ahead.
