After 50 Days, Sydney Sweeney’s $398M R-Rated Thriller Is Officially Dethroned by Jason Statham’s New Action Movie

I was so thrilled to see Sydney Sweeney really break out last year with Anyone But You! That movie was a total hit – seriously steamy, a really clever thriller, and it did incredibly well both in cinemas and when people started streaming it at home. It feels like the perfect franchise for her.

After spending an impressive 50 days as the most-watched title on Starz, The Housemaid has been overtaken by Jason Statham’s new film, Shelter. Shelter premiered on Starz on May 22nd and quickly rose to the top spot, according to data from FlixPatrol.

The action movie is doing well with on-demand rentals, currently ranking sixth globally on Amazon and eleventh on the Apple TV store.

Shelter Got Revenge on Streaming

Jason Statham has a lot on his plate, with two big movies coming out in 2026. The first, Shelter, was directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who also directed Angel Has Fallen and Greenland. It’s an action thriller about Michael Mason, a former British government assassin living a secluded life in Scotland. But his peaceful existence is shattered when he’s forced to fight his old enemies while protecting a young girl named Jessie, who they’re trying to eliminate him for.

The film starred Bodhi Rae Breathnach as Jessie Kelly, alongside Bill Nighy, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Céline Buckens, and Bally Gill.

Okay, so I just saw Shelter, and it’s… fine. Critics were pretty split, landing it a ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with around 65% giving it a thumbs up. The consensus? It doesn’t really break any new ground – it feels very familiar if you’ve seen a lot of Jason Statham movies – but it’s a tight, fast-paced action flick that mostly gets the job done. Honestly, audiences loved it much more than the critics, giving it an 87% rating. Seems like people are willing to forgive the rehashed ideas just for some solid, engaging action, and I get that.

Although the movie received good feedback from viewers, it didn’t make much money in theaters – only $53.9 million worldwide. With a $50 million production cost, it failed to become profitable. Now, however, it’s finding success through streaming.

The Housemaid Broke Records

Sydney Sweeney’s film, The Housemaid, first appeared on Starz on April 1st, but it had already been incredibly popular for over two months on various video-on-demand platforms. It continues to perform well, currently ranking in the top three on Amazon and second on Apple TV, even after being available on Starz for 50 days.

After premiering on streaming, the film became the highest-grossing Pay 1 release ever. It stayed at the top of the charts for an impressive 50 days before finally dropping to second place on its 51st day.

Due to the huge success of the thriller The Housemaid, Lionsgate has announced a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret. Production is scheduled to begin later this year, with the film expected to be released on December 17, 2027.

Shelter and The Housemaid are streaming on Starz.
