AFLW player Haneen Zreika and her husband Ozzy are expecting their first child.

26-year-old standout player for Greater Western Sydney Giants, announced an uplifting development to her teammates, which she later posted as a touching video on social networking platforms.

In the video, it appears that Haneen showed up to the team gathering later than scheduled, subsequently explaining to her teammates an unexpected cause for her tardiness.

Haneen shared with her teammates, “I’m doing well! Contrary to any suspicions, I’ve actually been unwell… The reason being, I’m expecting a baby.

The GWS team members leaped with joy when they rushed towards Haneen for a warm embrace, celebrating the thrilling announcement with her.

Later, Haneen shared her expected delivery date with her team who celebrated for her: “My little one is coming in November! Thank you all.

It is the first child for Haneen, who has played for Greater Western Sydney since 2018. 

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but admire Haneen, who boldly stands her ground in the league. In October 2022, she made waves by opting out of the AFLW’s pride round, upholding her religious convictions – an action she had taken once before.

On October 16 in Sydney, the scheduled match for her club will feature pride jumpers, but the Muslim athlete has announced she won’t participate due to personal reasons.

The event acknowledges and pays tribute to the LGBTQI+ community, as it’s deeply connected with the league due to a significant number of its participants identifying as gay.

In addition, she faced criticism in January that year for withdrawing from the Giants match, and it seems this controversy has resurfaced once more.

Haneen said she felt she had a ‘responsibility to represent her faith’ during pride round.

For her, it signified abstaining from donning the vibrant rainbow jersey that GWS had created for the match, as the AFL declined her suggestion to simply wear the standard uniform instead. This rejection made her feel like an outsider.

The swift midfielder expressed, “I had no intention of making a big fuss about it, but when the AFL declined my request to wear an ordinary jersey, I was taken aback by this development.” This sentiment was shared in the Disney+ AFLW documentary ‘Fearless’, which debuted at the start of the season.

‘I appreciate the AFL’s approach of involving everyone and promoting inclusivity. However, organizing a round where some individuals are included while others who it affects are excluded based on their beliefs seems contradictory.’

‘I really feel like an outsider, like, “no mate, you’re not part of us”,’ Haneenadded.

Haneen shares her team with several female team members who identify as lesbian, among them Captain Alicia Eva, Katherine Smith, and Pepa Randall. Haneen clarifies that she chooses not to pass judgment on these teammates, even though their personal beliefs may differ from hers.

In the documentary series, she expressed, “They have the freedom to choose who they are. Despite this, I continue to care for and value them; they remain my friends.
