AEW’s main event story isn’t quite working
As a long-time wrestling fan with decades of watching and analyzing the industry under my belt, I must say that I find myself somewhat perplexed by the ongoing saga of Jon Moxley and his crew in AEW. Having witnessed the meteoric rise of All Elite Wrestling and its unique ability to captivate audiences with compelling storylines centered around individual characters, this latest angle involving the company itself as a main character feels like a misstep to me.
I remember the days of the NWO in WCW, and while I appreciate the homage, I can’t help but feel that AEW could achieve greater success by focusing more on the personal narratives of its talented roster rather than trying to make the company itself the focal point. As a fan, I yearn for the days when wrestling storylines were driven by complex characters and their interwoven relationships, rather than a vague and unclear “takeover” plotline.
That being said, Jon Moxley remains one of my favorite performers in AEW, and I have no doubt that he will rise to the occasion when it comes time for him to shine in the ring. But if this angle is going to turn around, there needs to be a greater emphasis on character development, clear objectives, and a sense of urgency that has been lacking thus far.
In the immortal words of Ric Flair, “to be the man, you gotta beat the man.” Let’s hope that Moxley and his crew can find their way to a more satisfying conclusion for this storyline soon, because as it stands now, I’m starting to feel like I’ve seen this act before – and it didn’t end well the last time.
Oh, and one final thought: if Jon Moxley really wants to stamp out AEW, he might want to start with the guy who keeps writing these long-winded opinion pieces about him. Just a suggestion!
2025 has arrived, and I’m beyond excited for the inaugural episode of AEW Dynamite! Kicking off the year with a bang, we’ve got an epic six-man showdown as our main event: Adam Copeland teams up with FTR going head-to-head against the formidable Death Riders. This clash marks another chapter in the ongoing rivalry between Jon Moxley and his crew, who seem determined to shape AEW according to their vision.
When this match was teased at AEW Worlds End, there was a collective pause as fans questioned if this was the right move and whether the overarching storyline is starting to falter. Only time will tell if this high-stakes encounter will prove to be a turning point or another twist in the tale. I can hardly wait!
At AEW WrestleDream, when Moxley retired Bryan Danielson, the storyline started with a palpable sense of “fear” as its central theme. The plot development effectively portrayed Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Marina Shafir, PAC, and Wheeler Yuta as a formidable gang, determined to destroy anyone who dared oppose them. Yet, the excitement generated by this storyline seems to have diminished significantly, with viewers expressing confusion over the “why” or curiosity about where this narrative is headed.
At first, Moxley seemed to imply there could be a powerful orchestrator behind his scheme to dethrone AEW. This sparked speculation about Shane McMahon’s involvement, but subsequently, such language was no longer used.
It remains unclear what specific goals Moxley has in mind within AEW. Is there a particular individual or group he aims to eliminate from the organization? If he holds the championship, does that signify he’s considered the ultimate victor?
On the AEW side, there are still plenty of unanswered questions. While Copeland and FTR are indeed playing significant roles as protectors of the promotion, it’s important to note that they aren’t part of the initial foundation of All Elite Wrestling. In other words, they didn’t join AEW at its inception, which is often referred to as ‘AEW Originals’. Yet, their swift defense of the company leaves us wondering: what could be driving them to stand up so strongly for this promotion?
AEW has tried using their promotion as the central character in various storylines, but it hasn’t consistently delivered the expected impact. In contrast, the NWO angle in WCW years ago sparked a much greater interest. The most effective stories are those built around characters, which AEW has demonstrated successfully on several occasions. However, the question remains as to why AEW continues to focus on their company as the main character, and this is an issue that should be addressed in the coming year.
Jon Moxley plays a crucial role in AEW’s triumph and always delivers when presented with opportunities. However, there are some adjustments needed to turn the current main event storyline into a success as it currently isn’t resonating well.
