AEW makes the right call to have no interest in Matt Riddle
As a seasoned wrestling fan with decades of watching and analyzing the industry under my belt, I must say that it’s always intriguing to see the careers of some wrestlers unfold. Matt Riddle is one such individual who has managed to captivate audiences both for his in-ring prowess and off-ring antics. However, as a connoisseur of wrestling lore, I must admit that I am not sorry to see him being kept at bay from the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) roster.
In the realm of professional wrestling, it’s usually tough for someone to earn an “untouchable” status due to numerous instances where questionable individuals are given repeated opportunities within the industry (such as Hulk Hogan). However, there seems to be one figure who consistently finds himself barred from certain paths, despite his desires. Following whispers of a potential appearance in All Elite Wrestling, Matt Riddle and the wrestling community at large have discovered that Tony Khan has different ideas regarding his involvement.
During an interview with Steven Muelhausen from Sports Illustrated, the multi-time champion discussed numerous subjects, among them a potential return to WWE. He additionally mentioned considering joining AEW, a strategy that’s been employed by many ex-WWE entertainers.
Riddle shared, “I have many colleagues at that place. I admire the company. I appreciate their work ethic and the people themselves. In my opinion, the ideal choice would be joining AEW, earning a better salary, and maintaining a reasonable working schedule. However, I wasn’t keen on returning to TV. I didn’t want the limelight for some time. I desired a break. I yearned for Indie wrestling.
It appears that Matt Riddle might not be joining All Elite Wrestling (AEW) anymore, as reports suggest he’s “very unlikely” to make an appearance there. On September 14th, Fightful Select reported that AEW boss Tony Khan has shown little interest in recruiting Riddle for a while now. Additionally, it was mentioned that AEW talent who worked on the independent circuit or in Mexico did not collaborate with Riddle during this time.
This action seems wise, given Riddle’s history of attracting unwanted attention. He’s an individual who has been suspended multiple times by the WWE and was eventually let go in 2023. Furthermore, he was implicated in a lawsuit where the WWE was also named as a defendant. Riddle carries too much baggage, and any company would be wise to steer clear of him. However, New Japan Pro Wrestling and Major League Wrestling have chosen to collaborate with him, which raises some eyebrows.
It seems that Matt Riddle may have suggested a potential stint in AEW, but it appears that opportunity might no longer be available to him. Given his history of controversy, it seems that the doors to prominent wrestling companies could be shutting for him.
