AEW has gone all in on Kyle Fletcher

As a seasoned gamer who has seen his fair share of wrestling games and real-life matches alike, I can confidently say that Kyle Fletcher is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in the AEW roster. His journey from tag team partner to standalone superstar is nothing short of inspiring, and it’s clear that he’s got the skills to back up his ambition.

In the first AEW WrestleDream event, Kyle Fletcher and his partner, Aussie Open, contested for the AEW tag team championship against the current champs, FTR. Unfortunately, they weren’t successful in their attempt to claim the titles. To add to their disappointment, Mark Davis, Fletcher’s long-time partner, sustained a broken wrist during the match. This injury will keep him out of action for an extended period.

In professional wrestling, if a tag team partner gets injured or leaves, the remaining member can find themselves in a tough spot, either losing frequently in single matches or not being included in the storylines at all. However, for Kyle Fletcher, this situation opened up chances to take on some of AEW’s top wrestlers individually. After impressive performances against Bryan Danielson, Kenny Omega, and Konosuke Takeshita, it became clear that AEW recognized Kyle Fletcher’s potential as a solo performer.

Fletcher’s impressive performances led to a shot at the Ring of Honor Television Championship. He also kept getting chances to stand out individually on both AEW Dynamite and AEW Collision. Fletcher faced off against notable opponents such as Chris Jericho, Will Ospreay, Swerve Strickland, Kazuchika Okada, and MJF, further refining his skills. Although he lost in every major bout, the promising Australian was proving himself and appeared ready for a breakthrough moment.

Kyle Fletcher got his breakthrough moment at AEW Full Gear.

Regardless of Kyle Fletcher’s impressive performances, he was consistently overshadowed by his longtime friend, Will Ospreay. However, on October 12th at AEW WrestleDream, Fletcher stepped out from under that shadow when he ended their friendship. On this particular night, Ospreay defended his AEW International Championship in a three-way match against Ricochet and Konosuke Takeshita. It was Takeshita who emerged victorious, pinning Ospreay after Fletcher turned on Ospreay, striking him with a screwdriver. This betrayal set the stage for a rivalry between Fletcher and Ospreay, culminating in a career-defining match for Fletcher against Ospreay at AEW Full Gear.

The match at AEW Full Gear significantly boosted Kyle Fletcher’s career, but the lead-up to the bout was equally crucial. During this phase, Fletcher had the chance to deliver solo promos and engage in verbal sparring with Ospreay. This was an uncommon occurrence for Fletcher within AEW, yet he demonstrated his ability to stand tall against seasoned speakers. Through these interactions, he proved to the world that he’s not just an exceptional wrestler, but also a charismatic performer.

Despite Fletcher achieving his career’s largest singles victory over Will Ospreay at AEW Full Gear, AEW spectators remained skeptical about the continuation of Fletcher’s rise within the promotion. This hesitation was understandable given the number of promising, young talents who had seemingly been on the brink of main event status following significant wins or consistent crowd favoritism, only to see their upward trajectory thwarted by AEW’s booking decisions. At times, performers such as Wardlow, Ricky Starks, Hook, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Konosuke Takeshita appeared set to become top-tier players, yet their momentum often stalled due to poor booking or in some instances, a lack of continued booking entirely.

To put it in my own words as a fervent admirer: Unlike some wrestlers, Kyle Fletcher didn’t squander his victory over Will Ospreay; instead, he leveraged it to create a flawless 3-0 streak in the Blue League of the Continental Classic. What makes this impressive isn’t just the number of wins, but the caliber of opponents he’s defeated on this journey. In the esteemed tournament, Fletcher has outmaneuvered The Beast Mortos, Shelton Benjamin, and Kazuchika Okada, demonstrating that he’s no flash in the pan.

It’s yet unclear how far Kyle Fletcher might progress in professional wrestling, but there are some facts that can’t be denied. Fletcher possesses the physical skills necessary to rank among the world’s elite in-ring performers, regardless of the wrestling promotion he’s with. AEW appears to be fully committed to promoting the young Australian talent, which could mean Fletcher won’t just be considered a potential star in AEW anymore. If Fletcher keeps getting these chances, there’s a strong possibility he’ll become a mainstay at the top of the card for many years and might even be discussed as the 2025 Pro Wrestler of the Year.
