Adrien Brody and Tupac Shakur: Clubbing, Graffiti, and ‘Thug Life’ on the Set of ‘Bullet’

Adrien Brody has been nominated for another Academy Award, this time for his highly praised acting in the movie “The Brutalist”. However, he is reflecting on one of his early acting roles.

In 2002, the 51-year-old actor earned widespread recognition and became known to many when he clinched his first Academy Award for playing Wladyslaw Szpilman in the movie The Pianist.

Approximately six years prior, Brody mentioned during an interview with Variety that he feels his defining role might have been portraying Ruby Stein opposite Tupac Shakur in the 1996 crime drama “Bullet.

Brody had a limited number of acting credits to his name prior to securing the role in “Bullet.” Some of these roles include Mel in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1989 film “New York Stories,” Lester in Steven Soderbergh’s 1991 film “King of the Hill,” and Danny Hemmerling in the 1994 movie “Angels in the Outfield.

In this role, the actor portrayed Ruby, the youthful graffiti artist sibling of Butch ‘Bullet’ Stein, who was played by Mickey Rourke in the title character. They both confront a menacing drug lord, nicknamed Tank, who was brought to life on screen by Shakur.

Brody enthusiastically shared, “Collaborating with Pac on our film project was simply fantastic. His focus was truly remarkable, and we spent plenty of time together during the production.

Brody mentioned that we spent a considerable amount of time with each other, and he developed a strong bond with Mickey. Moreover, during that period, Mickey was very supportive and mentored me.

Because Ruby was a graffiti artist, Brody and Shakur often went out nightclubbing and, in a sense, decorated the city with phrases that Tupac’s fans came to know well.

As a devoted admirer, I shared Brody’s perspective: though he had made significant strides in the hip-hop world, the artist wasn’t the legend known as Tupac Shakur just yet. At that point, the famous “Thug Life” tattoo that adorned his chest was still absent from his body.

Brody mentioned that we were both creating graffiti, and he was putting up “Thug Life.” At the time, I wasn’t familiar with what he meant by that.

The movie was actually filmed back in 1994; however, its theater release didn’t happen until October 1996. Remarkably, this was only a month following the tragic death of Tupac Shakur in September 1996 at the young age of 25.

Brody persisted in his acting career, appearing in Six Ways to Sunday, The Thin Red Line, Spike Lee’s Summer of Sam, Harrison’s Flowers, and The Affair of the Necklace. Remarkably, he became the youngest actor ever to win a Best Actor award for his role in The Pianist at only 29 years old.

Despite this, he muses that even his representatives would concur that both casting directors and executives once doubted he could become the main lead.

He stated, “I’ve demonstrated that a main character doesn’t always have to be traditionally good looking or typical, but rather can be distinctive and unconventional.” He further explained, “While it might seem that less stereotypically attractive options could be more challenging, they are often simpler and safer.

In the film The Brutalist, the director Brady Corbet found the initial week particularly tough.

He mentioned that the experience significantly strengthened his bond with Adrien. They found themselves moving in perfect sync due to being plunged right into the heart of it all from the get-go.

‘Facing those sorts of conflicts together can be very, very bonding,’ the director added.

The film “The Brutalist” has been nominated for a total of ten Academy Awards, among them the coveted category of Best Picture, marking Brody’s second nomination in the Best Actor category.
