Adolescence makes ratings history for UK TV – and beats Netflix’s Fool Me Once in a single week
The teenage years have created a stir in television history, marking the first streaming series to lead the United Kingdom’s weekly TV viewership rankings.
Penned by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, this gripping drama narrates the tale of a 13-year-old boy named Jamie Miller, who finds himself falsely accused of killing a schoolmate, Katie.
In this series, Graham takes on the role of Eddie, Jamie’s father, alongside Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, and fresh talent Owen Cooper, who portrays Jamie.

Each installment is filmed in a single shot, delving into the ripple effects of a crime within the surrounding society, paying particular attention to how it impacts Jamie’s family and Jamie personally.
Based on data from ratings organization Barb, it’s been announced that a popular Netflix drama is now the first streaming series to claim the top spot in weekly ratings in the UK. This achievement surpasses traditional shows like The Apprentice and Death in Paradise.
According to the most recent data, the initial broadcast of the series “Adolescence” was viewed by approximately 6.45 million viewers within its first seven days. This surpassed the viewership of “Fool Me Once,” which garnered around 6.3 million viewers during its premiere week back in January.
This signifies that the highly-acclaimed series attracted the largest number of viewers for any streaming television program in a week’s time in the United Kingdom.
5.94 million viewers tuned in for the second installment of “Adolescence”, and the viewership dropped slightly to 4.65 million for the third episode.
As a passionate gamer, I can confidently say that “Adolescence” has earned a stellar five-star rating from Digital Spy. This year, it’s been gripping audiences and holding its own against some formidable competition. In the seven-day ratings race, it trails only behind BBC’s “The Traitors”, “Call The Midwife”, and the poignant documentary “Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell”. It’s a testament to its engaging storyline and quality production that it’s managed to keep viewers hooked.
In a recent discussion, writer Jack Thorne mentioned that the one-shot approach used in the show compels viewers towards intricacy.
He mentioned that being confined to a single shot means you’re limited in the narrative, as it prevents you from presenting the entire story at once. Instead, you can only reveal pieces of the story over time. In addition, focusing on one perspective for an extended period compels you towards intricacy, and ideally encourages the audience to engage with the complexity as well.
Adolescence is available now on Netflix.
