Adele Roberts reveals her stoma has prolapsed and she may be forced to undergo surgery after having bag fitted following colon cancer battle

In this poignant and insightful debut episode of The Life of Bryony, we delve deep into the life-altering journey of the resilient and inspiring Adele Roberts. Diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2021, Adele shares her remarkable story of survival, transformation, and humor.

Adele Roberts has shared that she might require surgery due to a persistent issue where her prolapsed stoma won’t stay inside its pouch, which is now over three years since she had colostomy surgery as a result of her fight against colon cancer.

The 45-year-old disc jockey, affectionately referring to her stoma as Audrey, took to Instagram to share photos of her visits with the nurse and attempted homemade treatments, hoping to postpone surgery.

In October of 2021, Adele received a diagnosis of bowel cancer. She shared details about her treatment on various social media platforms, including undergoing colostomy surgery to eliminate a bowel tumor and receiving a stoma bag as part of the procedure.

She revealed she’d spent days laying down in a bid to rectify the problem as well as using ice and sugar, which is said to work by drawing out fluid from the swollen stoma and helping to reduce the size.

“Relax, I’ve been lying flat for a few days now. Somewhere around Sunday evening and Monday morning, Audrey managed to slip out of her bag… and she won’t be returning.

She’s incredibly large – almost like the Hulk. Regardless of any flattery, compliments, or gestures, nothing seems to make a difference with her.

This is the second instance my stoma has protruded, and it hasn’t lasted this long before. I’m extremely concerned about her. I’m hoping beyond hope that we can reposition her and save her. It feels like she’s a beached whale that needs to return to the ocean. We urgently need to get her back into the right place.

Once more, the entire NHS team and my exceptional stoma nurse Elaine have truly outdone themselves. They’ve surpassed expectations. One final attempt to reinsert the Audster is needed; if not, there may be a need for surgery.

She went on to say, ‘One possibility is to sever her playful little head – and begin anew… I’m not sure she’d be keen on that.’

I’m truly upset, as I’m deeply concerned about her wellbeing. She’s going through a tough time right now. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a swift recovery… and we have an upcoming ‘Global Six-Star Marathon Challenge’ that we’re committed to completing. Unfortunately, the next marathon is just around the corner, next week. Audrey, please be on your best behavior! Why are you causing this distress?

‘Everything crossed, let’s see if we can manage to reach Chicago… by any means necessary – walking, running, or even crawling… We truly appreciate everyone who has helped us out or donated to our cause so far… and if conditions permit, we’ll finish it off.’

Regardless of how much time it requires, I am continually inspired by numerous remarkable individuals within the running community and the charitable organizations I support (Crossroads Care UK and Attitude Magazine Foundation). As the ‘rebellious hope’ champion once said, let’s keep pushing forward with determination.

I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you for your kindness and the encouraging messages you’ve been sending. Your words are a source of strength and have helped keep our morale high, not just me but Kate as well.

Following Adele’s disclosure about her life with a stoma bag, she expressed gratitude for having a “new lease on life” after her colon cancer surgery was performed by doctors.

She  spoke to Mail columnist Bryony Gordon for the first episode of her new podcast series – The Life of Bryony.

Following a query from Bryony about the timeline of when her colostomy bag was first installed, Adele, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2021, clarified that this is now a more advanced approach she employs for emptying her bowel.

She mentioned that she refers to her stoma as her “front bathroom” lately, since it serves as her method for going to the restroom.

In 2021, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer and had a significant growth in my large intestine. Fortunately, the NHS provided treatment and successfully removed the tumor. This marked a new and improved approach to my toilet routine.

Nevertheless, the radio host elaborated that although the operation was a success, there remained a significant opening close to her colon following it. Consequently, her small intestine protruded from her abdomen, acting as a stoma.

She clarified: ‘During the healing process, as they worked on rejoining the torn parts, they temporarily redirected my focus by extending a portion of my small intestine through an opening in my stomach.’

Adele noted that many individuals have a stoma, but hers is specifically known as an ileostomy since it originates from her small intestine and resides exteriorly on her body, approximately two inches, when it functions properly.

‘That’s where all the output of my food and drink now goes, rather than me going to the toilet.’

Intrigued, I asked Adele to divulge the reason behind naming her stoma “Audrey” and what sparked this unique choice of namesake.

Adele shared that her stoma was fitted surprisingly fast during the operation, and she was taken aback when she awoke to find one already in place.

She said: ‘They didn’t know how big the tumour was, so it was a little surprise. They said it could happen, but I wasn’t sure. So when I woke up from the surgery, looked under the covers and saw that I had a stoma…’

As an overly enthusiastic fan, I can’t help but wonder if perhaps there was some sort of special reveal, akin to unwrapping a surprise. She didn’t casually mention, “Oh by the way, Adele, when you peek beneath your covers, you’ll find you’ve got a stoma.” Instead, it seems like this revelation might have been left for another time or place.

Adele responded: “Upon waking, I found myself all by myself. Firstly, I felt grateful to still be breathing. After recovering from the surgery and pulling back my blankets, I noticed that I had a stoma.

The radio host shared her sense of relief after undergoing cancer surgery and her newfound perspective that she’s been given an additional opportunity to live.

She expressed that when she received her diagnosis, there was a brief moment that seemed surreal, as if her life had vanished, only to have the doctor offer assistance, making her feel like she regained her life once more. This instance became a profoundly significant turning point in her existence.
