Addison Rae and Grupo Firme among 3,600 invited to join Recording Academy
Due to the success of her breakout singles such as “Diet Pepsi” and positive remarks from artists like Charli XCX and Lana Del Rey, many experts predict that Addison Rae is a strong contender for the Best New Artist nomination at the upcoming 68th Grammy Awards.
Now the 24-year-old singer could help determine the results of the ceremony as well.
The Recording Academy announced on Wednesday that it has extended membership invitations to approximately 3,600 music industry professionals. This group includes a popular figure from TikTok who has risen to prominence in the pop scene over the past year.
Apart from Rae, the academy also invited Joey Bada$$, Mariah the Artist (previously known as Mariah the Scientist), comedian Nikki Glaser, as well as members of the K-pop-styled group Katseye and regional Mexican music collective Grupo Firme.

In a conversation, the 33-year-old country artist discusses the rugged, self-named album he produced with Frank Liddell.
In a statement, Rae expressed her invitation as a significant honor and admitted feeling fortunate to be among such inspiring talent and grace that fuels her fearless creation. Glaser added that this recognition from the Grammys was the most remarkable thing they’ve bestowed upon him since acquiring half of Benson Boone’s tuxedo following the February show.
Out of the 3,600 newly invited individuals, roughly 2,600 (which includes the previously mentioned artists) will be given the opportunity to become voting members in the academy. The current number of voting members is approximately 13,000, and last year, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. informed The Times that as part of a broader initiative to diversify an electorate often criticized for being too old, male, and white, both new members would be added and voters who no longer met the organization’s membership qualifications would be removed.
To illustrate his point, Mason explained “individuals who perhaps achieved fame with a chart-topping single or album release during the ’70s or ’80s, and continue to vote”. His aim, he noted, was to create a voting demographic made up of “music industry veterans”.
In their announcement, the academy revealed that nearly half of the newly invited individuals are women, over half are people of color, and about two-thirds are under the age of forty. The deadline for these individuals to accept the invitation is July 31 in order to participate in next year’s ceremony. The first round of voting for the 68th Grammys commences on October 3; this is where nominations are selected. The event itself will be held on February 1 at Crypto.com Arena, located in downtown Los Angeles.
