Adam Scott severs himself from hype, which makes Emmys recognition for ‘Severance’ a ‘delight’

The dystopian drama “Severance” resonated strongly with overworked Americans when it showcased an uprising against a repressive corporation. Now, both the series and its main character, Adam Scott, are receiving accolades from the Television Academy. On Tuesday, Scott was nominated for best lead actor in a drama category for his portrayal of Mark Scout in the gloomy, sci-fi thriller.

This year, the Apple TV+ series has received the most nominations out of all shows, earning a total of 27 nods for its second season. Among these are recognitions for categories such as drama series. In Scott’s specific category, notable actors who have been nominated for Emmys in the past are contenders, with Sterling K. Brown for “Paradise,” Gary Oldman for “Slow Horses,” Pedro Pascal for “The Last of Us,” and Noah Wyle for “The Pitt” being included.

Here are the nominations for the 2025 Emmy Awards.

In the TV show, Scott’s character, Mark S., serves as a manager for data refinement in Lumon Industries, a biotech firm. To access the clandestine facility, he and his colleagues have undergone a process called “severance,” which involves brain surgery that creates two distinct consciousnesses: their work selves, referred to as “innies,” and their personal lives, known as “outies.” However, complications arise when the boundaries between these realms become unclear.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the visionary minds behind our beloved series, Dan Erickson (show creator), Ben Stiller (executive producer and primary director), were among those recognized with nominations. In the acting categories, we saw Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, John Turturro, Patricia Arquette, and Gwendoline Christie also receiving well-deserved nods for their exceptional performances. Scott, another executive producer on our show, recently spoke with The Times about the recognition our series has received, his role in its creation, and how he manages to distinguish himself from his work.

‘Severance’ Season 2 is a refined, thrilling masterwork

3 years later, Apple TV+’s thriller is back, offering additional doses of chilling sci-fi elements, insightful societal critiques, and dark comedy. Plus, you get the bonus of fruit leathers!

The series “Severance” exceeded expectations upon its release in 2022, and it’s a thought-provoking show that demands mental engagement. Now, Season 2 is dominating the Emmy award nominations.

The sensation is indescribable. Typically, I find myself in a state of expecting nothing to happen, preparing myself for potential letdowns. However, maintaining such an attitude seems beneficial for a profession in entertainment, as it makes any unexpected outcomes all the more gratifying. I strive to avoid speculation and predictions about my prospects. I keep them at arm’s length and attempt to minimize their influence on my thoughts. Consequently, surprises like this [nomination] bring me immense joy.

I appreciate your approach of disregarding the excitement and speculation about the program, it feels like a personal detachment strategy.

Indeed, it’s accurate. Over the past three decades, I’ve honed strategies for maintaining good health, though imperfectly so. To put it simply, I focus on staying dedicated to my tasks, ensuring a balanced lifestyle that allows me to perform at my best.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I recently had the privilege of joining Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Dichen Lachman, the talented director Ben Stiller, and the visionary series creator Dan Erickson for an enlightening discussion about the stunning Season 2 finale of our favorite show, “Cold Harbor.” We delved deep into the intricacies of the plot, explored the characters’ emotional journeys, and speculated on what might be in store for us in future seasons. It was a truly unforgettable experience!

Clearly it’s a tactic that’s paid off, for you and your fellow cast mates.

I’m truly humbled that our series has been acknowledged and finds itself amongst other esteemed productions like those helmed by Britt, Tramell, Zach, John, Patricia, Merritt [Wever], Gwendoline, Ben, Jessica [Lee Gagné], and Dan. The exceptional script we all labor over is being celebrated, a testament to the collective effort we pour into our project. Our show demands a significant investment of time, so receiving recognition for our hard work feels exceptionally rewarding.

And there’s something redeeming about such a smart show breaking through in such stupid times.

I chuckle as I say this, but let me explain. ‘Severance’ is something elusive, so we put tremendous effort into bringing it to life. As we create the series and Dan and his team craft it, there’s an unseen barrier, like an electric third rail. You can’t quite define it, yet when it feels right, it’s as if you’ve found our show. It’s a unique sensation, a particular mood that we strive to capture, and sometimes it takes time to pinpoint and achieve.

Dan created an unusual story all on his own, and we were thrilled when it gained recognition because we never expected anyone to watch it. In truth, we thought the story might be too strange for many people, so its growing popularity came as a delightful surprise.
