Adam Peaty reveals a hilarious link to his girlfriend Holly Ramsay's foul-mouthed father Gordon by admitting he suffers from a 'red mist' before his Olympic races

As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I can wholeheartedly relate to Adam Peaty’s struggle with pre-race anxiety and the ‘red mist’ of fury that takes over just before a major event. It’s not uncommon for high achievers to face such emotional turbulence, as we all have our unique ways of channeling our competitive spirit.

Although Adam Peaty is most recognized for his impressive Olympic achievements, there’s a connection between him and Gordon Ramsay (Holly Ramsay’s dad) that they share: they both struggle with stage fright.

The champion swimmer, aged 29, disclosed that just prior to significant races, he experiences an intense rage, often referred to as a “red mist.” He needs to calm down before diving into the pool for competition.

It’s a trait that Gordon can relate to, given the chef is best known for his foul-mouthed TV rants.

Prior to his second-place finish in a major race over the weekend, Adam shared insights about his preparation routine during an interview with the BBC. Specifically, they wanted to know how he gears up for such significant competitions.

Instead, he mentioned that he was attempting to soothe himself due to his excessive excitement. This involved listening to music, doing some stretches, or recalling joyful memories shared with Holly, George, his mother, and father.

“I fill my mind with optimism and hope right up until just a few minutes before the race, then a wave of anger washes over me, signaled by a red mist.”

Gordon acknowledged that he’s familiar with experiencing intense anger, often referred to as the ‘red mist.’ He admitted that, in dealing with his anger, he draws comparisons to how Adam handles such situations.

The chef expressed: “It seems you have a strong will to outwit others, but sometimes your frustration gets misunderstood. How do you release it, since I can empathize and express my feelings openly as well.”

Peaty added: ‘I do that but it offends people.’

After Holly made a touching homage to Adam, it was following his heartbreaking near-miss of claiming a third gold medal in the 100m breaststroke finals at the Olympic Games in Paris.

On her Instagram Stories, Holly posted a picture showcasing her freshly done nails, which now bear the athlete’s initials.

Apart from that, she additionally posted a picture showing her pool items, namely a plush toy and a Spiderman action figure. This was following the semifinals on Saturday where Adam was accompanied by his three-year-old son, George.

Last year, Peaty was on the verge of quitting the sport, but he made a promise to himself that he would put in his utmost effort to secure the gold medal at his third Olympics.

However, he only lost by a mere two hundredths of a second to Nick Fink, with both finishing simultaneously.

Following an unexpected loss, Adam wept despite the tip predicting a victory. Yet, he confessed, ‘Victory in my heart has already occurred.’

In a heartbreaking turn, the brilliant British swimmer narrowly missed out on claiming a third consecutive Olympic gold medal.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must admit, I find myself on the verge of shedding tears not because I’ve fallen short of first place, but because the journey to reach this point has been nothing short of Herculean. These are tears of joy, you see, for every sunrise and sunset, every sleepless night, every drop of sweat, every ounce of determination poured into giving my all, day in and day out. And so, while I may not have crossed the finish line as the first, I am content knowing that I’ve given it my absolute best, and that is a victory to be proud of.

‘It’s just incredibly hard. To win it once, and to win it again, and to try and win it again.

Every action leading up to now seems to hold purpose, and I’m thrilled beyond words that I get to compete against the world’s elite and finish as runner-up.

As I find myself maturing with each passing day, I recognize that maintaining my current pace requires some form of compromise.

‘It manifests in numerous forms, such as my choices of when to act, how much energy I exert, and the connections I cultivate. Competing against the youth is challenging, yet I find immense joy in this reality, for deep down, I know there was no more I could have given.’

Every Friday, I can’t help but gush about my one-year partner who’s not just a boyfriend, but an extraordinary dad too! I feel incredibly grateful to witness him shine at his competitions, truly showcasing his talent and dedication.

Ever since my life-changing encounter with Holly in 2023, I find myself brimming with an uncontainable joy that eclipses any struggles I’ve faced before – battles with depression and alcoholism included.

In a recent Instagram post, Holly expressed how fortunate she felt to have observed you throughout the past year. She marveled at your unparalleled perseverance and commitment.

Despite countless hours dedicated to training, regular team gatherings, workouts at the gym, physiotherapy sessions, and all that, you’ve consistently been an exceptional father to George and a wonderful partner to me. Witnessing numerous training sessions and hosting team breakfasts has only deepened my gratitude for being a part of your universe.

‘I love you. Go out there and smash it. Enjoy it all, you deserve everything and more.

‘Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. – 1 Corinthians 16:13’.

More recently, Adam openly shared that he experienced a three-year ordeal akin to living in hell, battling depression, alcohol addiction, and a breakup with his longtime partner, Eirianedd Munro. However, he has since found renewed enthusiasm for swimming once more.

After being severely affected by the sport, he confessed that he no longer desired to encounter swimming pools again due to being shattered by it. In response, he sought refuge in alcohol and social gatherings as a means of distraction.

When questioned about his decision not to abandon the sport entirely during his most difficult times, he responded by saying: “I was on the verge of letting go completely. Why return? Was it just pride? It took some time to uncover the reason.”

As a person who has faced numerous challenges and setbacks throughout my life, I firmly believe that perseverance is the key to success and happiness. I have learned that when things get tough or the world seems stacked against you, it’s essential not to give up. Instead, you must keep pushing forward and find ways to overcome the obstacles in your path.
