Adam Pearson to Play Elephant Man in New Movie Adaptation

Adam Pearson, famous for playing Oswald in the 2024 film titled “A Different Man“, is set to take on a substantial role in an upcoming adaptation of a well-known classic. Known for living with neurofibromatosis, Pearson has been chosen to portray Joseph Casey Merrick in an imminent adaptation of Bernard Pomerance’s acclaimed play, “The Elephant Man“. In an interview with Variety, Pearson expressed that he has a “deep and intricate connection” with Merrick.

Initially, his name was used as an insult, but through documentaries I’ve presented, I came to understand more about him personally. This experience has been a healing journey for me, transforming my feelings from avoidance to admiration and respect towards Joseph Carey Merrick, who was once a figure I barely considered as a child. Now, as an advocate for people with disabilities and an actor, there’s no greater honor (and significant responsibility) than sharing his true story.” – Pearson expressed this.

In an unprecedented move, Pearson will be the one to embody Merrick in the upcoming adaptation, a role previously brought to life by actors such as Bradley Cooper, David Bowie, and Mark Hamill on stage. The script for this new version is being crafted by Moby Pomerance, son of the late playwright Bernard Pomerance, who originally created the Tony Award-winning play. Eve Pomerance, Bernand’s daughter, has shared her enthusiasm about Pearson’s selection for the role.

My dad always believed that using prosthetics during performances detracted from the narrative, making it harder for viewers to fully connect with Merrick and understand him. Instead, he wanted the audience to identify deeply with Merrick, seeing themselves in him. Statements like ‘I am not an animal, I am a man,’ which have come to define the play, will resonate more powerfully when told by Adam, allowing the audience to truly walk in Merrick’s shoes. My father would be ecstatic to see his vision come to life.

A New Take on the Tragic Tale of ‘The Elephant Man’

In the year 1980, David Lynch’s film “The Elephant Man” was first released, yet it wasn’t an adaptation of the Tony Award-winning play. Instead, it was inspired by the true story of Joseph Merrick. This black-and-white production received numerous accolades and nominations for awards such as Best Picture, Best Director (David Lynch), Best Actor (John Hurt), among others. It maintains a high rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly, a remake of Lynch’s version is also in the works.

Born in 1862, Merrick struggled through life due to physical abnormalities, possibly caused by Proteus syndrome, which made him a target for exploitation in freak shows. However, his life took a turn for the better when he met Sir Frederick Treves, a surgeon at the London Hospital. At the hospital, Merrick found compassion and social engagement, thriving under these circumstances. Tragically, he passed away at 27 years old due to asphyxia complications related to his health condition.

In 2013, Pearson first appeared on the big screen in “Under the Skin.” However, it was his role in “A Different Man,” released last year, that truly put him in the spotlight. This film featured Sebastian Stan as Edward, a passionate actor living with neurofibromatosis who opted for a transformation surgery. Upon starting his new life, he learns that his previous neighbor has penned a play based on his experiences. Eager to land the part, Edward auditions while keeping his identity hidden. However, the appearance of another character named Oswald, played by Pearson and also living with the same condition, causes Edward’s carefully constructed facade to crumble. The movie was penned and directed by Aaron Schimberg and received numerous positive reviews, ultimately earning Stan a Golden Globe Award.

In this forthcoming adaptation of “The Elephant Man“, Pearson’s casting signifies a pivotal instance in film depictions of disability, offering viewers an opportunity to witness a genuine and compassionate portrayal. Filming for “The Elephant Man” is slated to commence next year.
