Action movie from 2006 becomes surprise Netflix hit despite bad Rotten Tomatoes score
2006 film titled “The Sentinel” has unexpectedly gained popularity on Netflix, even though it received a relatively low rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In this movie, Michael Douglas plays a character who’s a Secret Service agent. He becomes accused of treason following an attempt on the U.S. President’s life. This suspicion arises when it’s discovered that sensitive information was being given to the would-be assassins.
Approximately two decades following its debut, “The Sentinel” has gained significant popularity on Netflix. This week, it ranks second among global Top 10 movies, boasting 7.9 million views and a staggering 14.2 million hours of watch time. In the UK, it holds the third position in the rankings.
Initially, the film didn’t receive favorable reviews from critics when it was first released, earning a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it turned out to be more appealing to audiences, who gave it a 41% positive response.
In their critique, the BBC described the story as being just as captivating as watching paint dry on an unnecessary United Nations treaty. On the other hand, Empire magazine advised that if you’re seeking top-notch suspense, it would be more beneficial to purchase a 24 box set instead.
As a gamer putting on my detective hat, I’ve got to mention that “The Sentinel” stirred up some controversy back then. This was because a real-life Secret Service agent named Tim McCarthy, who bravely saved former president Ronald Reagan’s life during the 1981 assassination attempt, wasn’t exactly thrilled with it.
The movie is helmed by Clark Johnson, with Kiefer Sutherland from the series “24”, Eva Longoria known for her role in “Desperate Housewives”, Martin Donovan who was in “Tenet”, and Kim Basinger, famously recognized for her part in “LA Confidential”, all taking on roles.
I wasn’t surprised to find out that Blacklight, Liam Neeson’s 2022 movie, has been a hit on Netflix despite its low Rotten Tomatoes score. Just like some other films, it’s defying expectations and resonating with viewers.
The action film features an actor portraying a former Vietnam soldier turned FBI troubleshooter, who exposes a hidden government scheme.
The Sentinel is available to stream now on Netflix.
