Ace Frehley, founding guitarist with theatrical rock band Kiss, dies at 74

I was really sad to hear about the passing of Ace Frehley. As Kiss’s original lead guitarist, he was such a huge part of the band’s iconic look and sound – you know, the face paint, the pyrotechnics, the whole over-the-top rock experience. He was 74.

I was so incredibly saddened to hear about Ace Frehley’s passing. His record company, MNRK Music Group, confirmed the news, and his family shared that he died in Morristown, New Jersey. I knew he’d been unwell – he’d fallen last month and had to cancel some shows. Sadly, TMZ reported he was on life support at the hospital before he passed. It’s a huge loss for music and for all of us who loved his incredible guitar playing.

Ace Frehley, known as the Spaceman, was a key member of the original Kiss lineup from 1973 to 1982. He helped create the band’s signature energetic and glamorous sound, showcased in hits like “Detroit Rock City,” “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Strutter,” and “I Was Made for Lovin’ You.” During the late 1970s, Kiss’s music and elaborate concerts made them a huge part of pop culture, appearing on everything from comic books to lunch boxes. Today, they’re recognized as pioneers in rock merchandise.

Ace Frehley, a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, briefly rejoined Kiss in 1996 for a popular reunion before returning to his solo work, which he began in the early 1980s. In 2023, Kiss finished a farewell tour, ending with a final concert in their hometown of New York City at Madison Square Garden.

This obituary will be updated.
