When the robotic rulers ended the life of Sasha 55, the Doctor mourned the loss of his comrade, causing speculation among fans regarding the repeated emotional expressions of the Fourteenth Doctor.
Instead, as stated by showrunner Davies in an interview with TV Line, the tears seen in the latest regeneration are not indicative of any underlying problem with the regeneration itself; rather, they were not part of the written script.
In the 2024 Christmas special titled ‘The Church on Ruby Road’, Davies recalled, “It was the first time [Gatwa] did it, and I’ll never forget it. He seemed to believe that Ruby had disappeared, vanished from time and space, which was quite astounding. In response, he delivered a performance in the studio that left us all speechless, truly magical.
An actor of such prominence doesn’t need instructions about whether to cry or not. He continued, ‘It’s just like telling someone to laugh or not to laugh! Gatwa’s performance is a unique gift, and it presents a fresh perspective for the Doctor, opening up avenues for entirely new experiences.
Davis clarified that Gatwa’s portrayal of an emotionally accessible Doctor offers a unique perspective on the character, maintaining the longevity and intrigue of the ongoing series.
Diversity encompasses various aspects, and at times, it means expressing feelings on-screen that have not been portrayed before, or feelings that this character has kept hidden.
However, it amuses me… Often, fans become quite passionate and express their displeasure. They are the very same fans who demand innovation in the show, to which I can only respond, “Good day!
Speaking highly of Gatwa’s acting, he said: “I’m merely here to observe and express gratitude for the chance to partake in such regal acting. What a talented actor! Remarkable!
