The Absolute Universe is steadily expanding, with more familiar DC Comics characters joining the new world. Absolute Flash #8 specifically introduces two important figures: the original Flash, Jay Garrick, and a villain that readers have been anticipating, now officially appearing on this new Earth.
Absolute Flash #8, written by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Travis Moore, tells a story from the past focusing on Barry Allen. It begins with Allen struggling as a scientist; his groundbreaking ideas about quantum simulation and molecular electron transfer were rejected by Princeton University. Despite this setback, Dr. Elenore Thawne believes he’s the perfect person to assist her with the Blue Trinity project.
Blue Trinity was a top-secret US military project that ran alongside the atomic bomb tests led by Oppenheimer. Its goal was to try and connect with another dimension – one thought to be filled with a unique form of life energy. The project was shut down when the chief scientist started focusing on mystical, rather than scientific, methods and claimed to be hearing a voice from this other dimension, a place he described as beyond our universe.
Jay Garrick and Eobard Thawne in the Absolute Universe explained
The leading scientist is shockingly revealed to be Eobard Thawne, also known as Reverse-Flash, and the grandfather of Dr. Elenore Thawne. Determined to validate his life’s work, he created a gateway to another reality. Jay Garrick, a military police officer, attempted to intervene, but both he and Thawne seemingly vanished into this other world.
After the recent flashback, it’s unclear what will happen to Jay Garrick and Eobard Thawne. But it seems improbable that they were brought into the story just to be quickly eliminated. It’s likely Jay Garrick will return as the original Flash in this new universe. Similarly, Eobard Thawne, who is clearly unstable, will probably become the Reverse-Flash, just like in the primary timeline.
