Absolute Superman No. 2 is amazing and it starts with Lois Lane

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast with over two decades of reading under my belt, I must say that Jason Aaron has outdone himself with Absolute Superman. The introduction of Lois Lane, a military officer turned rebel, is a breath of fresh air and a testament to Aaron’s storytelling prowess.

During my chat with Jason Aaron at New York Comic-Con, I inquired about Absolute Superman. With a cryptic smile, he simply replied, “Be patient.” The first installment was an incredible opening act; the second issue made his enigmatic grin understandable. It was nothing short of genius. There are numerous points to substantiate this, but let’s focus on Lois Lane’s introduction instead.

On Earth-Prime-like Lois, the extraordinary counterpart of Superman, chose a career in the military instead of journalism. Initially, she obeyed orders as usual. Yet, much like the Lois Lane from Earth-Prime, there’s an independent streak within her. When she realizes that the person she was apprehending posed no threat, she deviated from her original course of action. This unexpected move eventually allowed Superman to confide in someone on Earth for the first time.

“It’s important that I get my thoughts down accurately. My thoughts. Not Brainiac’s.” -Lois Lane

Upon her return to headquarters, Brainiac, disguised as an AI, crafts a report that paints Superman in a negative light. However, it’s not just an automated system; Brainiac (who appears to be Lex Luthor in disguise) is the one manipulating the information. Lois isn’t aware of this hidden hand, but she doesn’t let it bother her. Despite her dislike for writing reports and their monotony – a departure from her usual self – she found herself driven to do so. She described the experience as significant enough to put into words. And when she completed her work, she was pleasantly surprised by the sense of accomplishment it brought her.

I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing where this story unfolds, as some readers might not have wanted Lois and Superman to form a relationship in this series given their pairing in DC Comics’ traditional narrative. However, at this point, it’s uncertain whether Superman and Lois will be together. Previously, we’ve seen characters like Wonder Woman as the last Amazon in “Absolute Wonder Woman” and Martha Wayne alive in “Absolute Batman”. This suggests that the familiar elements aren’t always set in stone within the “Absolute” universe. It’s also important to recall that this world was crafted by Darkseid, implying some terrible event is likely to occur.

It’s possible that Jason Aaron is carefully developing the connection between Lois and Superman, potentially setting up a tragic end for her. Such an event might push Superman over the edge, leading him to unleash destructive power or even bring about Earth’s destruction—a scenario reminiscent of Doomsday.

As a gamer, I’m speculating here, but it seems like Brainiac might be up to something. If my guess is correct, he could be using this world as his next target, giving him the perfect excuse to bring the full might of the Lazarus Corp against Superman. However, let me make it clear: this isn’t a battle that Brainiac or the Lazarus Corp are likely to win. Keep an eye on TopMob for updates on how this unfolds.
