Absolute Power changed the DC Universe (seriously)
As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into the rich lore of DC Comics, I must say that the finale of Absolute Power was quite the rollercoaster ride! The twist and turns, coupled with the unexpected alliances and betrayals, kept me on the edge of my seat.
In the DC Comics event known as Absolute Power, Amanda Waller orchestrated a scheme where she tricked the world into believing that heroes were responsible for crimes worldwide. She then, with the aid of Task Force VII, seized powers from both heroes and villains on Earth Prime, keeping these powers for their own use. The situation became even more dire as Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) and Batman’s android, Failsafe, lent their support to Waller. However, the heroes ultimately rose up against her, with Nightwing taking charge of the rebellion. They launched an attack on Waller, successfully reclaiming their planet from her control.
As a hardcore Absolute Power gaming enthusiast, I’ve just wrapped up the latest installment, and let me tell you, it was an epic finale! Here’s a rundown on what happened, plus the impact it has on the DC Comics universe:
Green Arrow: Double Agent
It seemed as though Green Arrow didn’t appear to be a traitor, but at certain moments, it appeared he supported Waller’s mission. This was not without cause. J’onn J’onzz had secretly planted a mind-controlling implant in Oliver Queen (Green Arrow), causing him to ally with and trust Waller. Once the device reached its expiration, he initiated his plan to resist.
It was only due to the help from Green Arrow that John Starr’s technology could be discovered and modified so that everyone could regain their powers again.
Powers are switched
The trio consisting of Green Arrow, Batman, and John Starr disarmed Task Force VII, but their powers didn’t distribute evenly. For instance, Plastic Man is now losing visibility rather than stretching, and Black Canary’s cry has transformed into laser vision instead of her trademark sonic scream.
It seems likely that each person’s possessions will eventually find their original owners again. Until then, it will be interesting to observe how everyone adjusts to their circumstances.
Is Dreamer immortal?
In issue number 2 of “Absolute Power”, Dreamer sacrificed herself to aid the heroes in their escape. Given that she’s not as well-known as Wonder Woman or Superman, it seemed like this might be permanent. However, not only did she come back to life, but her resurrection was also logical and well-explained.
In the world of Absolute Power #4, I’ve held onto Lara in my dreams, unwilling to let her slip away. This magical connection drew her into the dream realm, providing her with precious time for healing. So as long as she remains a part of my memories, she’s immune to death.
Amanda Waller loses her memories
Even though Amanda Waller was defeated, people are aware of her potential danger. With enough secrets at her disposal to potentially buy herself freedom from Belle Reve (where she found herself locked up), she could have escaped that predicament if not for Dreamer. However, Dreamer didn’t eliminate the secrets, but instead, Amanda Waller is now unable to retrieve them. In essence, Dreamer effectively resolved the problem without erasing the secrets from existence.
It’s uncertain how long this situation will persist. We’ll have to wait and see if Waller recalls her past and manages to manipulate her way free from Belle Reve, or discovers another means of escape. I suspect she’ll be freed by someone who supports her cause, leading to the formation of The Cult of The Wall.
Multiverse is cut off
Amanda Waller attempted to enlist villains from different dimensions as a backup plan if she ever lost self-control. However, thanks to Hal Jordan and Barry Allen, this strategy didn’t materialize. Regrettably, the only viable option seemed to be sealing off access to other universes.
The plan was successful, however, it doesn’t open up immediate possibilities for travel to other Earths – not anytime soon, that is. Neither Wally West nor anyone else can speed-vibrate their way into another dimension at this moment. Additionally, Barry Allen has temporarily lost his superpowers during the process.
The Justice League returns
Once the situation has calmed, Green Arrow summons Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman for a discussion. It’s understandable that they are angry because he didn’t share his plan with them earlier. Injuries were sustained, abilities were exchanged, and Red Tornado’s condition seems critical and potentially permanent.
Yet, Oliver makes a valid observation as he mentions that he had no one to contact since the Justice League ceased operations. It’s then that Batman reveals to Green Arrow the blueprints for the Justice League Watchtower. The next page hints at further developments in Justice League Unlimited.
Does the world believe the videos?
While this event wasn’t directly detailed in the narrative, it’s plausible that some folks might doubt the veracity of what Nightwing and Air Wave presented to the world. History shows that the media has deceived the public within these comic book worlds. Some readers might suspect Amanda Waller’s confession was manipulated, leading them to question the authenticity of her AI videos. This, in turn, could erode trust in superheroes.
The severity of future events is yet unknown, but this author anticipates the emergence of Amanda Waller’s faction, dubbed The Cult of The Wall. Keep an eye out for TopMob as they’ll be reporting on this development should it occur.
