Abruptio: Weirdly endearing horror puppetry (spoiler-free review)

As a connoisseur of the macabre and a long-time aficionado of horror cinema, I must say that “Abruptio” has left me utterly spellbound. This blood-soaked puppetry masterpiece by Evan Marlowe is not just a movie; it’s a fever dream that seeps into your very soul. The roster of voice talents, including the legendary James Marsters, Jordan Peele, Robert Englund, and the late, great Sid Haig, elevates this oddball masterpiece to a level I never thought puppetry could reach.

It’s quite challenging to put into words for someone unfamiliar with it, but Evan Marlowe’s horror puppetry, titled Abruptio, can be described as a gory, nightmarish experience. This movie is further enriched by the voice talents of renowned horror actors such as James Marsters, Jordan Peele, Robert Englund, and the late Sid Haig. Abruptio stands out as one of the most bizarrely captivating films of the year.

As the guy famously known as Spike on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Marsters, I’m the main character, Les Hackel in this game. Things aren’t exactly going my way right now – my girlfriend called it quits, and I’m stuck with a desk job that’s more paperwork than action. Luckily, I’ve got my buddy Danny, voiced by Peele, who brings his comedic talent to the table, making our friendship even more entertaining. But let’s face it, Danny can be a bit of a goofball sometimes.

As Les struggles to make sense of his ordinary life, his predicament takes a dangerous turn when he finds an explosive device implanted within him upon waking up. If he refrains from committing heinous crimes, the device will explode. These crimes primarily consist of taking lives, and along this bloody path, he crosses paths with other characters facing similar peril.

In the film, Les encounters two standout personalities: Sal, portrayed vocally by Haig, and Mr. Salk, voiced by Englund. Their roles are delightfully eccentric. The voice acting from these horror icons adds to the movie’s allure, making it a must-watch. It’s clear that they relished playing these offbeat characters.

Apart from being among the most imaginative movies I’ve watched this year, “Abruptio” is also exceptionally gory. Every crime escalates the tension and the casualty rate. On more than one occasion, Les finds himself splattered with blood. The puppetry in the film is commendable. Given that the production of this movie started in 2015 without any CGI effects, it’s remarkable that it’s only now reaching theaters this month, demonstrating Marlowe’s dedication and passion for his work. It’s truly impressive that he managed to pull this off.

Despite its terror-filled scenes, the movie also delves into a puzzle. The protagonist, Les, is determined to uncover who has been implanting these devices within individuals. However, Police Chief Richter (played by Christopher McDonald) persistently pressures Les to “admit,” yet Les remains clueless about what he should confess. Revealing more would ruin the movie’s plot twists. The story culminates in a heart-wrenching and unexpected ending.

In terms of visual impact, “Abruptio” stands out as one of the most striking films released this year. The vocal performances are superb, with Marsters bringing a lively touch to an otherwise ordinary character. The inclusion of Peele, Haig, and Englund, along with others, completes an exceptional ensemble for voice acting. To sum it up, “Abruptio” is a remarkable film featuring numerous puppets and generous amounts of blood.
