Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Finds Success on Streaming After Flopping in Theaters

Even though Halloween has passed, many people are still watching scary movies. Recently added to HBO Max, a certain horror film has quickly become one of the platform’s most popular titles, making it into the Top 10.

According to the streaming data site FlixPatrol, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has become surprisingly popular on HBO Max. Just two days after being added, it entered the Top 10 movies, and it’s now climbed to No. 6. It’s currently behind a couple of holiday favorites (Elf and The Polar Express), the It movies, and Weapons, which remains the most-watched film on the platform. This success is notable because the movie, produced by Tim Burton, wasn’t a hit in cinemas back in 2012, earning only $116 million worldwide despite costing between $69 and $99 million to make.

Timur Bekmambetov directed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, a film adapted from Seth Grahame-Smith’s 2010 novel of the same name. Grahame-Smith is also known for his humorous take on classic literature, like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which was also made into a movie. This film reimagines Abraham Lincoln, played by Benjamin Walker, as a secret vampire hunter who battled supernatural slave owners during the Civil War. The movie also stars Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, and Marton Csokas.

Tim Burton’s Connection to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Is Interesting

Tim Burton’s role on Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is notable because it’s one of only six films where he served solely as a producer. He usually both produces and directs his movies, but for this film, he only developed the story and characters. The other films he only produced were Cabin Boy (1994), Batman Forever (1995), James and the Giant Peach (1996), 9 (2009), and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016). Interestingly, Batman Forever and Alice Through the Looking Glass were sequels to films he directed – Batman Returns (1992) and Alice in Wonderland (2010) – and both sequels were less well-received by critics than the originals.

Tim Burton is enjoying a career comeback, thanks in large part to the popular series starring Jenna Ortega, which is based on The Addams Family. The show’s success led him to collaborate again with its creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, on a sequel to his 1988 film Beetlejuice. The new film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, released in 2024, was a critical and commercial hit, earning $452 million worldwide. As of now, Burton hasn’t announced his next project, but

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is currently streaming on HBO Max.
