'ABC World News Tonight' veteran Almin Karamehmedovic is the new president of ABC News

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of news broadcasting over the decades, I find the appointment of Almin Karamehmedovic as the new president of ABC News to be an intriguing turn of events. His journey at ABC News, from freelance editor in London to executive producer of “World News Tonight With David Muir,” speaks volumes about his unwavering commitment and dedication to the field.

Almin Karamehmedovic, who has been the executive producer for “ABC World News Tonight With David Muir” for a long time, has now taken on the role of president at ABC News. In this new position, he’ll be dealing with the challenge of boosting the financial success of the news division.

On Monday, Debra O’Connell, President of News Group and Networks at Disney Entertainment, made an announcement about a new appointment. Karamehmedovic has been tasked with managing the daily operations within this division and will now directly report to O’Connell.

Karamehmedovic’s responsibilities encompass a variety of ABC News programs such as “World News Tonight With David Muir,” the highest-rated evening newscast on TV, “Good Morning America,” “The View,” “20/20” and “Nightline.” Additionally, he will manage ABC News Live, their streaming news service, the production studio, and special event coverage.

Karamehmedovic takes over from Kim Godwin, who departed following a three-year tenure. The choice to appoint him came unexpectedly, as many within ABC News anticipated a leader with prior involvement in “Good Morning America,” their primary profit earner.

Godwin arrived at ABC News from CBS, tasked with transforming the news division’s culture after a high-ranking executive departed due to racially insensitive remarks about the network’s Black personnel. Under her leadership, substantial budget reductions were implemented, ultimately resulting in several longtime executives leaving the network.

Under Godwin’s leadership, ratings for “Good Morning America” began to decline, yet it’s worth noting that all traditional broadcast networks are experiencing a drop in viewership due to a shift towards online platforms among younger audiences, who now prefer digital sources for their news and video content.

Karamehmedovic is anticipating a similar situation, as it’s likely he’ll be tasked with cutting costs within the network’s news sector. In the upcoming months, there might be numerous job cuts across the industry, including Disney, as media companies strive to streamline their news operations due to declining audiences and an effort to reduce expenses.

Since taking over “World News Tonight” in 2014, I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with its anchor, David Muir. I first joined ABC News back in 1998 as a freelance editor based out of London. Throughout my tenure as a producer for the network, I’ve covered tumultuous regions across the Middle East and the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

Prior to working at “World News,” Karamehmedovic served as an executive producer for “Nightline.” He began his tenure with “Nightline” in the role of producer back in 2008.

According to O’Connell’s statement, Almin has spent his entire professional journey at ABC News, excelling in every position and significantly enhancing the quality of journalism through deeply impactful connections with viewers.
