ABC viewers lash out at News Breakfast's constantly revolving roster of hosts: 'Might as well get whatever presenter shows up first'

As a dedicated viewer of ABC News Breakfast for many years now, I must say that I find myself growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of consistency in the hosting roster. I understand that things happen and people have to travel, but it seems like every time I tune in, there’s a new face on the screen.

As a devoted follower, I’ve noticed that some viewers are expressing frustration over what they perceive as inconsistency in the hosting lineup at ABC News Breakfast. They believe that changes could be made for a more stable and predictable experience.

Since Michael Rowland is hosting the program from the United States because of the U.S. Presidential Election, Bridget Brennan has had to manage the show from the studio with a rotation of substitute anchors.

This week, Bridget and Catherine Murphy are taking turns hosting the studio, with Charles Bice handling the sports segment.

James Glenday has also filled in for Rowland while he is abroad.

And the lack of continuity is beginning to irk viewers, with many voicing their displeasure online.

One user inquired on the Media Spy forum, “Why bother with a fixed schedule if they can’t show up for an entire week?

‘Might as well have whatever presenters get there first to co-host at this point.’

Another said the revolving roaster of hosts could be confusing for casual viewers.

‘Isn’t that what they already do?’ another sarcastically replied.

In all likelihood, many casual viewers might assume that the temporary presenters are the real ones, while the designated hosts are standing in for them instead.

Additionally clarifying the situation, a viewer knowledgeable about News Breakfast’s programming schedule disclosed that Rowland is slated to return to the studio for only two days this week, after which Catherine Murphy will take charge.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Michael Rowland returns, and then it’s over to Emma and Catherine on Friday for the hosting duties.

One viewer asked why newsreader Emma Rebellato, who returned this week from leave, was not given a run.

They stated that Emma has returned to the news today, following a five-week break. It seems quite unusual for someone else not to be hosting instead.

The current hosting shuffle comes amid a year of change at ABC News Breakfast.

In July, Lisa Millar, who had been hosting for five years, decided to step down from the show. She was succeeded by Brennan in August.

In September, sport presenter Tony Armstrong announced his decision to leave the show in October, marking the end of his three-year tenure as presenter.

Rowland has also hinted at a move away from ABC News Breakfast in September, revealing the ‘intense’ role has taken a mental toll.

In an engaging conversation with his fellow ABC alumnus and ex-co-host of News Breakfast, Virginia Trioli, during her podcast “You Don’t Know Me”, Michael openly discussed his desire to find a job with fewer demands or pressures.

‘I’m getting older, the ripe old age of 55 this year,’ he said.

Each passing year seems to intensify its impact on me – the long hours and the heart-wrenching tales we’re obliged to share as a committed journalist, delivering our daily news.

Michael mentioned that the task is becoming increasingly demanding for him, affecting his personal life and family time, and he’s eagerly anticipating a less strenuous experience.

Although the host acknowledged he hadn’t initiated discussions with ABC management concerning a departure plan for the show he cherishes, he hinted that he perceived himself being ‘nearer to the conclusion than the start.’

‘I hasten to say I love the show. I’m not about to do anything rash,’ Michael continued.

At present, I’m deeply enjoying my tasks, however, I find myself nearing the conclusion more than the start of this production and the demanding news broadcasting.
