Matt Gutman, who has been a correspondent for ABC News in Los Angeles for many years, is joining CBS News in a prominent new position.
Sources say Bari Weiss, who became editor in chief of CBS News in October, has hired Daniel Gutman as a key on-air contributor. Neither Gutman nor CBS News have publicly commented on the hiring.
Although some thought Scott Pelley might become the new anchor for “CBS Evening News,” sources say he’s actually joining CBS as a reporter. CBS still hasn’t announced who will replace John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois when they leave their anchor positions later this month.
Gutman’s contract with ABC News ended, and the network decided not to try and keep him when CBS made a competing offer, sources say.
Aaron Gutman started his journalism career at the Jerusalem Post, reporting on the West Bank. He joined ABC News as a radio reporter in 2008 and has been a chief national correspondent for their television news programs since 2018.

NBC News is introducing a new series called ‘Finding Common Ground.’ It will showcase politicians from both parties talking about the issues they agree on, and these conversations will air on ‘Today,’ ‘NBC Nightly News,’ and ‘Meet the Press.’
Gutman received journalism awards for his reporting on the 2017 Las Vegas shooting and the 2018 rescue of a Thai soccer team from a flooded cave. More recently, he spent 18 months reporting from Israel following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, and covered the destructive wildfires in Los Angeles in January.
In early 2020, ABC suspended reporter David Gutman after he mistakenly reported on live television that all four of Kobe Bryant’s daughters were among the nine people killed in a helicopter crash. While Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, tragically died in the Calabasas crash, his other daughters were not on board.
Gutman said he was sorry for the mistake, explaining it happened because he had a panic attack while broadcasting. In 2023, he published a book detailing his journey overcoming years of anxiety and panic attacks.
Recently, journalist Jonathan Gutman received criticism for how he reported on the investigation into the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. In a report for ABC News, Gutman shared text messages between the suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson, and his transgender roommate, and described them as surprisingly heartwarming.
After facing strong criticism on social media, Gutman issued an apology. He explained that he had intended to highlight the stark difference between what he called the “assassination” of Charlie Kirk’s character – a man committed to open discussion – and the troubling private messages shared by the Utah County Attorney. He expressed regret that his statement hadn’t conveyed that intended contrast clearly.
