ABC News Breakfast star Michael Rowland hints at exit due to the 'mental health toll' of work: 'It never gets easier'

As a dedicated follower and admirer of Michael Rowland’s journalistic career, I can empathize with his decision to seek a less intense role. Having spent years in the industry myself, I know too well the physical and emotional toll that reporting on distressing events can have. The hours spent away from family, the stress of covering breaking news, and the weight of presenting such stories can become overwhelming.

Michael Rowland may be indicating his intention to leave ABC News Breakfast due to the heavy personal impact the position is having on him.

In conversation with his fellow ABC alumnus and ex-News Breakfast co-host Virginia Trioli on her podcast You Don’t Know Me, Michael expressed his search for a more relaxed position.

‘I’m getting older, the ripe old age of 55 this year,’ he said.

Year after year, its impact becomes increasingly clear – the long hours, the heart-wrenching tales we must share as reporters on our news broadcast.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must confess that the current pace is becoming increasingly demanding, affecting not only me but also my cherished family bonds. I eagerly anticipate transitioning towards a less strenuous phase.

Although the host acknowledged that he hasn’t initiated official discussions with ABC management regarding a departure plan for the show he cherishes, he also hinted that he feels more inclined towards wrapping up his tenure rather than starting anew.

‘I hasten to say I love the show. I’m not about to do anything rash,’ Michael continued.

Currently, I’m deeply engrossed in my tasks, yet I must admit that I’m approaching the final stages rather than just starting out with this show and high-pressure news reporting.

Michael instead expressed: “However, I anticipate finding myself at a new location off the roadway in the coming days, doing something unique.”

He found that certain tales displayed on the program, titled as “the wall of despair,” had an unfavorable impact on his psychological well-being.

It never gets easier,’ he said.

This morning, we discussed a troubling domestic violence case, and it reminded me of something comforting. I feel affected and apologetic.

Michael took on the ABC News Breakfast presenting role in 2010, replacing Joe O’Brien.

At present, alongside co-host Bridget Brennan, Michael spent a span of four years before assuming the role of ABC’s Washington correspondent.

Michael’s announcement came after ABC News’ Breakfast; he was compelled to cease his report midway through August following a live broadcast-induced panic attack)

At approximately 6:30 am, Nate abruptly ended the live broadcast to take a brief pause, informing the audience, “I must halt for a moment.”

With a trembling voice, he shared with the audience: ‘Some of you might recognize this, but I sometimes experience anxiety attacks, and I’m having one at the moment.’

Appearing on the Carrie and Tommy Hit Network show after the episode, Nate revealed being on camera in front of the ‘weather wall’ triggered his panic attack.

“He acknowledged that it’s incredibly distinct for him, thankfully, this difference manifests solely when he’s at a specific location, which oddly enough, should theoretically be his most secure place.”

My preferred place in the world is at the weather wall, where I feel most comfortable doing what I do. However, this special moment occurs only when a camera is present.
