ABC Is Hyping The Golden Bachelor Season 2 With Cute Commercials, But I’m Still Not Over Mel Owens’ Comments About ‘Cutting’ Any Women Over 60

As a huge Bachelor fan, I’m excited to hear Season 2 of *The Golden Bachelor* is coming in 2025! It was so disappointing to see Gerry Turner’s marriage didn’t work out, but the show’s producers have promised Mel Owens will be a different kind of leading man. Honestly, it’s easy to see why, considering the stir he caused over the summer. ABC is already trying to get us hooked with previews, and they *are* kind of sweet. I’d be totally on board if I could just forget about those pretty insensitive things Mel said about age earlier this year.

I was watching the live broadcast of *Dancing with the Stars* on ABC on September 16th, which, of course, included commercials. I mostly ignored the ads, but I definitely paid attention whenever one for Season 2 of *The Golden Bachelor* came on. Based on the way the ad was edited, it looks like the season will follow a familiar format, and the contestants seemed more lively than Mel Owens. However, I might be predisposed to dislike it, because the new Bachelor said he would eliminate any woman over 60, which I found off-putting.

Mel Owens, a former linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams, is 66 years old. He recently discussed what he shared with producers of *The Golden Bachelor* about what he’s looking for in a partner, during an appearance on the In the Trenches podcast.

They asked me what age range I preferred, and I told them honestly that I wanted people between 45 and 60. That’s why I was chosen. Later, I had lunch with the executive producer and told them I wouldn’t include anyone over 60.

It’s not surprising his comments spread so quickly online. Typically, leads on *The Bachelor* franchise don’t share potentially controversial information until the season begins. However, this podcast episode came out in June – nearly four months before *The Golden Bachelor* premiered on ABC (and became available on Hulu the next day). And that wasn’t all he said; Owens continued by stating:

I’m sure they’ll be gorgeous, I really am. But I wasn’t involved in choosing them at all. They didn’t even ask about my experience or qualifications. They just asked what kind of look I prefer. I told them I like to stay fit, so they should find people who are in good shape. I also asked them to avoid things like fake hips or wigs, you know, to keep it natural.

Honestly, he really came across as charming, didn’t he? It’s no surprise his comments caused a stir. Even Jesse Palmer, the host, had to address all the headlines, and fans were quick to ask him to be more mindful. It’s become a big conversation – even the ladies on *The View* had a lot to say! Apparently, we’ll see the women from Season 2 of *The Golden Bachelor* reacting to everything on-screen. It really got people talking, and it’s interesting to see what ABC was advertising during *Dancing with the Stars* at the same time – here’s an example of one of those commercials.

The previews for *The Golden Bachelor* Season 2, featuring Mel Owens, don’t suggest any drama, so I’m mostly curious to see how ABC will address the fact that the contestants know about his past comments. The women competing for his affection range in age from 58 to 77, with most being in their early to mid-60s.

You can watch the first episode of ‘The Golden Bachelor’ with Mel Owens on ABC Wednesday, September 24th, at 8 PM Eastern Time.
