Abby Takes Center Stage: What to Expect in The Last of Us Season 3!

The spotlight will be on Abby for longer than non-gamers expect when The Last of Us returns.

At a press conference following the finale of season 2, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin discussed the surprising encounter between Ellie and Abby, including its twist that sets the stage for season 3. Just as in the game, the episode flashes back to “Day One” in Seattle, suggesting that the upcoming season will delve into what Abby was doing while Ellie pursued her quest for vengeance.

Mazin clarified that this upcoming aspect of “The Last of Us” universe will add complexity to the audience’s understanding of heroes and villains. He emphasized, “There’s a lesser-explored angle to this narrative which we haven’t fully explored yet. Without a doubt, Abby is the protagonist in her own tale. Kaitlyn Dever consistently delivers heroic performances. If you have a Kaitlyn Dever on board, you make use of her talent. Therefore, moving forward, whatever direction we take, will always revolve around a character, whether it’s Ellie and Dina, or Abby and her relationship with Owen, or new relationships.

When asked about the story’s future, Mazin playfully hinted, “I can only reveal that we haven’t concluded Bella Ramsey’s or Isabela Merced’s storylines, and many characters who are currently deceased in the narrative have more to show.” Druckmann also hinted at some exciting moments from Abby’s chapters being included in season 3, emphasizing, “There’s an extraordinary scale to what’s coming up, but Abby’s tale will significantly impact Joel and Ellie’s journey as we know it so far.” Some notable scenes mentioned by the pair were Abby traversing a massive crane bridge and encountering a horrific Infected boss creature confined in the hospital basement from season 2.

Similar to its game counterpart, The Last of Us Part II Season 2, has received mixed reviews, garnering more positive criticisms than from viewers. Controversies surrounding the series included criticisms about Dever’s portrayal of Abby not matching her muscular in-game physique, Bella Ramsey’s performance, and the decision to have Abby kill Joel early on, setting Ellie on a revenge path. In contrast to focusing solely on Ellie’s perspective, Season 3 may delve deeper into Abby’s storyline, hinted at by the finale’s preview of a significant battle that was featured in the Part II Abby narrative.

Season 3 Is Expected to Start Filming This Year

It’s said that the filming for season 3 is likely to start this year, but no specific release date has been announced yet. Apart from The Last of Us, the game studio Naughty Dog is currently developing another game, with actress Tati Gabrielle cast as the main character.

The Last of Us season 2 is currently streaming on Max.
