Aaron Carter's sister Angel reflects on experiencing 'so much loss' following the deaths of her three siblings

In reflecting upon Angel Carter’s life experiences, it is impossible not to be moved by her courage and resilience. Her journey, marked by the heart-wrenching loss of three beloved siblings, serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of addiction and the indomitable human spirit.

In an open conversation, Angel Carter discussed her journey through sorrow after losing her siblings Aaron, Bobbie Jean, and Leslie, who passed away due to complications related to drug addiction.

Commemorating a year since Bobbie Jean’s demise, the 37-year-old vocalist became visibly moved while talking about her commitment to eradicate ‘generational issues’ in her kinship.

Before Aaron died, he shared something profound with me that has stayed with me ever since, and he said, ‘My dear friend Angel, you are not fully informed about the complexities of addiction.’ This statement resonated deeply within me, particularly after his passing, because I indeed lacked a comprehensive understanding.

She continued: ‘The last couple of years, I’ve just been really trying to educate myself about this disease and how it affects people and how it causes things that they do that they may not mean to do.’

As a devoted parent, I strive to find age-suitable methods to discuss complex topics like substance abuse and boundaries with my five-year-old daughter, whom I share with my husband Corey Conrad, in a way she can understand.

Angel clarified, ‘Growing up in my house, we didn’t create a secure environment for discipline or preserve their innocence. Looking back at Aaron’s life and my own, I can see that our innocence was lost.’

Angel noted that since Aaron was a child star and worked as an adult in show business, it denied him the opportunity for a typical, carefree childhood.

She emphasized that what matters most is preserving her child’s purity while allowing her to explore, develop, and evolve into the individual she aspires to be someday.

The performer also revealed that her grief is not ‘linear.’

As someone who’s faced an overwhelming amount of loss, I’ve learned to anticipate the unexpected, yet strive to keep my loved ones’ memory alive. On significant dates, like our recent birthdays – Aaron and I turned 37 – I make a conscious effort to find solace and be fully present. I honor them by engaging in heartfelt conversations, keeping their spirits ever-present within me.

Angel takes care to preserve the memory of her siblings by recounting stories about them to her daughter, who recognizes Uncle Aaron, Aunt Leslie, and Aunt Bobbie Jean.

She also revealed that Harper and her late twin Aaron’s son, Prince, three, ‘have play dates’ and are close.

She marveled at her nephew, who is just three years old, as he’s already proficient in reading and writing. It leaves me utterly amazed!

While speaking about Bobbie Jean, Angel remembered her sisters as a ‘loving, funny.’

Angel expressed about her sister’s sorrowful demise, “She never inquired about what transpired, it wasn’t her misdeed, and she certainly didn’t deserve such treatment.” Angel wishes for her sister to be remembered as a person worthy of affection, saying, ‘I want people to recall her as an individual who deserved love.’

In 2012, Leslie tragically lost her life at the tender age of 25 due to an overdose. Aaron met his untimely end in 2022, aged 34, as a result of drowning, with Xanax and difluoroethane involved. Similarly, Bobbi Jean passed away in 2023 at the age of 41, following an intoxication caused by a combination of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

During the month of April, Angel engaged in an open conversation with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, where they discussed their tumultuous childhood experiences.

She recounted that her parents were constantly arguing and her home life was chaotic without clear rules or consistency. There was no one to confide in, making it feel as though she couldn’t rely on her parents when facing personal problems.

When asked if fame aggravated the family issues, Angel replied, ‘I do.’

As the devoted sibling, I’ve always admired the meteoric rise of my brother, Nick Carter, who became an icon as part of the Backstreet Boys. Meanwhile, my own musical journey reached new heights when Aaron’s career took off with the smash hit “I Want Candy” in 2000.

Angel commented, “It truly altered everything, I must say.” Nick has been part of the Backstreet Boys since I was barely older than four or five. In other words, he’s been with them for quite some time.

Originating from the less populated regions of New York, our family was financially strapped. Our circumstances were starkly different, as my parents struggled to make ends meet. Then, something unprecedented happened that brought us financial relief. Once we started receiving income, it significantly altered our relationships, as money now became the primary driving factor.

Angel shared with Gayle that for quite some time, she’d clung to the belief that Aaron might one day recover. However, as his final days approached, she admitted that any hope she once held had slipped away from her.

She told her child about her decision to break free from this recurring behavior, hoping it would give them an untainted perspective on life – something Aaron never experienced during his lifetime.

She clarified that Aaron, due to starting work at a young age as if an adult, never truly had the carefree nature of childhood. Instead, all he longed for was the comfort of home.

On December 23rd, 2023, Bobbie Jean was discovered unconscious in the bathroom of her residence located in Tampa, Florida.

Bobbie Jean, the mother of an 8-year-old girl named Bella, was under probation for cocaine possession before her passing, as stated by the authorities. However, her roommates claimed that she had abstained from using narcotics ever since her release from prison.

The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner in Florida has stated that she died as a result of an overdose from a mix of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Her death was ruled accidental.

Some people might recognize Bobbie Jean as the contestant who appeared on the reality TV series “House of Carters,” which first aired back in 2006.

She, like her late brother Aaron and late sister Leslie, struggled with substance abuse.

Aaron tragically passed away due to an unfortunate incident involving drowning at his residence in Lancaster, California. This accident occurred following his intake of difluoroethane and alprazolam, which is the generic equivalent of Xanax. At the time, he was 34 years old.
