“AAA” action RPG set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is coming
As a long-time fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement when I hear about the upcoming game from Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive. Having grown up with Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, and the rest of the gang, the prospect of exploring this vibrant world in a new way is incredibly enticing.
Since the mid-2000s, Avatar: The Last Airbender has been a popular franchise, with numerous video games set within its vibrant world. However, none of them have made a significant impact or achieved great commercial success. A new game from Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive could potentially change that.
In a world heavily influenced by Asian culture and history, where individuals possess the ability to manipulate elements such as earth, water, fire, and air, lies the setting of “The Last Airbender.” The concept for a video game seems evident: press X to ignite fire. According to IGN, this upcoming game, still without a title, is being referred to as the largest game in the history of the “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series. Given that they may be referring to the franchise’s history or franchises overall, it’s clear they’re aiming for greatness either way.
The central figure in both the original animated series ‘The Last Airbender’ and its live-action adaptation on Netflix is Aang, who represents the latest embodiment of the Avatar, a unique individual capable of controlling all four elements. Generally speaking, stories based on ‘The Last Airbender’ revolve around Aang, except for the sequel series ‘The Legend of Korra’. As announced by IGN, the upcoming game will be set thousands of years prior to Aang’s era and allow players to assume the role of a brand-new, previously unseen Avatar. According to Paramount and Saber, players can anticipate being engrossed in a colorful world, learning to command all four elements, battling alongside companions, and encountering the trials and choices that come with being the guardian of balance in this world.
Saber Interactive boasts a considerable portfolio and has often transformed television shows and films into video games. They’ve been involved in projects like the ‘World War Z’ game, as well as a ‘Ghostbusters’ game. They’ve also worked on titles such as ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ and remasters of the ‘Halo’ series. Their upcoming project, the ‘Last Airbender’ game, will be developed in collaboration with Avatar Studios, a company founded by the creators of the original animated series. At present, they are working on new ‘Last Airbender’ animated movies.
This upcoming game, yet to be officially named, is considered a “Triple-A” game. Essentially, this term is used when developers aim for a game with exceptional detailing and superior quality. However, whether the game truly deserves such a distinction remains to be seen.
It’s often challenging to determine which film and TV series will receive the top-tier video game adaptation, as some do while others don’t. For example, there are numerous high-profile games associated with the Star Wars universe, like the recent release of Star Wars Outlaws in August. However, other franchises such as Game of Thrones, despite its massive popularity, have yet to receive a full console game; it only has mobile games and a narrative-style game from Telltale.
The new Last Airbender game will be available for both PC and consoles, whenever it comes out.
